LEMAN O. MINER, OF BROOKLYN NEW YORK.
CIGAR-TIP CUTTER.
SPEOIFICATlION, forming part of Letters Patent No. 539,817, dated May 28, 1895. Application filed August 16, 1894. serial No. 520,484. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEMAN G. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Tip Cutters; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and to use the same.
The object of my invention is to produce a cigar cutter of annular or open form, so that a clock or any other form of indicator maybe secured within the annulus or opening, and to this end, my invention consists of the mechanism described in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
Similar letters refer to like parts in all the views of the drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation; Fig. 2, a side elevation; Fig. 3, an elevation of the device with the annular cover removed; Fig. 4-, a section of the casing, taken along line 4 4 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view ofthe movable part of the cutter mechanism.
The annular cutter frame or casing A, which has concealed within it the cutter mechanism, is mounted upon a suitable base B, which can be secured to the counter or show case by screws 0. Screws D secure the annular casing A to the base B, or they may be cast together. I
The annular cutter casing consists of the exterior part or casting E, as shown in Figs.
3 and 4, and a cover plate F secured thereto by suitable means, as by screws G. The casting E is provided with a number of lugs H, having a step or ofiset I, upon which rests the ring J. The ring J is provided with a lug K to which is secured the knife blade L, which has a diagonal cutting edge M, and is capable of being slid by the opening N in the casing E, into which the cigars to be clipped are inserted. To the lugK is also attached a retracting spring 0, which is secured to a stationary part, as E, by means of a lug or screw,
V as D. At one part of the ringJ there isa finger piece P projecting through a hole Q in the casing E. When all the parts are secured in place, the cover F has been screwed to the casing E, and the annulus has been mounted the point of the cigar.
on the base frame B, a clock or other device of suitable form is inserted in the interior of the annulus.
The operation of my device is as follows: Upon placing the tip of a cigar into the opening N of the casing E, the finger piece P is pressed and the ring J will revolve upon its bearings on lugs H and the knife L will clip Upon releasing the finger, the spring 0 will bring the ring J and knife L into its original position.. -To remove the clippings, the cover F can be taken off, or the clock or other indicating device in the annular casing removed.
It is obvious that instead of the lugs 11, a single circular upright ledge might be used for guiding the ring or knife holder J. It is also obvious that the outside casing E might be of octagonalor other shape instead of being entirely circular, provided only a circular bearing be left for the knife, and a circular bearing be provided on the inside for the knife holding ringJ to revolve upon; also that the opening B. into which the clock or other independent device is to be inserted, need not necessarily be circular, but may be of any shape suitable for holding the clock, &c.
Having thus described the nature of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pattent, is-
In a cigar tip cutter, the combination of a cylindrical exterior shell, guides arranged concentrically within said shell constituting the wall of an axial opening; front and back covering plates secured to the shell and pro vided with central openings coinciding with the axial opening, said openings forming a through passage suitable for the reception of a clock or other registering device; a ring rotatably mounted on said guides and provided with a knife resting against the inner face of the cylindrical shell and in proximity to a hole in said shell; a returning spring conncting the, ring with the shell, and a handle for rotating said ring and knife for the purpose of clipping cigar tips inserted in said hole, substantially as described.
LEMAN O. MINER.
W'itnesses:
HENRY BEAM, HERMAN PRAGER.
