To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WELCH' BARSTOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of lVashington, have im'ented new and useful Improvements in Recording-Thermometers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in recording thermometers.
The object of the invention is to provide, in a recording thermometer, improvements in the means for inclosing the same and locking the inclosure; in the frame therefor; in the means for supporting a recording sheet; in the means for adjusting the initial position of the marking pen; in the means for varying the amplitude of movement of the pen; in the thermostat; and in the marking pen.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates an outer cylindrical case having a closed bottom 9. A short, inner cylindrical case 2 having a base 3 and an upwardly extending wall 33, fits tightly in the upper, open end of outer case 1. The base 3 and wall 33 support the mechanism of the apparatus, while the cylindrical portion of the case 2, which renders said base 3 rigid,'fits tightly in the case 1 to form a permanent oint. To the. lower side of the base 3 is secured,by screws 4, '(Fig. 1') the frame 6 of clock-work mechanism 7, having a main spring 8, wound by Specification of Letters Patent.

Around that portion of shaft 13 which extends above the base 3 is a winding spool 14. Upon the threaded, upper end of shaft 13, extending above spool 14, is screwed a winding key 16, which, being screwed down on shaft 13, presses against the bottom of a socket 17 in the top of spool 14 and thereby presses the bottom of spool 14 against the roughened, upper surface of a collar 18. Collar 18 is secured to shaft 13, rotating therewith and extending through the hole in base 3 through which shaft 13 extends. The winding spool 14 is thus caused to rotate with shaft 13 through the engagement- Patented Apr. 30, 1918.

The frame 23 comprises, in addition to wall 22, an approximately semi-circulartop 28 integral with wall 22 and having'a de ending flange 29 contiguous with flanges 2 which extend rearwardly from wall 22 (Fig. 8). Flange 29 is formed with a number of portions bent outwardly to form sockets 31 which are adapted to receive teeth 32 cut in the upper edge of the upwardly extending wall 33, teeth 32 being bent inwardly to enter sockets 31. From the bottom of wall 22 depend lu s 34 which are received in slots 36 (Fig. 9 formed in the base 3 of case 2, and secured therein by being headed over as at 102. By means of lugs 34, slots 36, teeth 32 and sockets 31,'the frame 23 is firmly secured to base 2.
the support or table 39 for the sheet 19, the extreme end of sheet support 21 being rounded as at 103 so that sheet 19 can travel smoothly, and without friction around it.
The free end of sheet 19, or that which is not attached to spool 14, is wound up on itself in a roll, as at 104, and roll 104 is inserted in the receptacle 37.
That end of sheet 19 which is adjacent to its point of attachment to spool 14 ispassed between the end of the cylindrical portion 37 of sheet support 21 and the portion 38, thereof, and then over the table 39. The lower edge'of sheet 19 is received in a guide 41 (Fig. 1) formed by bending up the lower edge of table 39. Integral with guide 41 and extending upwardly therefrom is lip 105, Whose function is to assist in the insertion of sheet 19 under guide 41. There is also provided an upper guide 42, formed by bendin the upper edge of table 39 up and over. That portion of sheet 19 which is adjacent to its point of attachment to spool 14 is cut away on its upper edge, as shown at 35 (Fig. 10) so as to clear guide 42, so that when sheet 19 is wound on spool 14, the upper edge of the main body of sheet 19 will be drawn under guide 42.
Extension 33 is formed with apertures 40 to permit the air from the interior of the car, or other chamber of which the temperature is tobe recorded, to circulate within the device and in contact with a thermostat which consists of a compound strip formed of two metals 68 and 69, having different heat coefiicients of expansion, in the form of a spiral coil 43.
The inner end of coil 43 is secured to a portion 44 extending outwardly from, or at substantially right angles to, an arm 45 (Figs. 2, 4) which is pivoted by means of a screw 46 to a bar 26. A. pin 47 is adapted to rotate in a hole 48 provided in bar 26, and is held therein by a headed-over portion 106. The head 100, integral and eccentric with pin 47, is adapted to hit snugly but rotate in the round hole 108 provided in arm 45. The end of head 100 is slotted as at 109 so that it may be rotated by means of a screw driver.
After temporarily loosening screw 46, the pin 47 may be rotated by turning head 100, thereby causing head 100 to move a small distance from its initial position which causes arm 45 to turn about the screw 46, thus rotating the coil 43. Arm 45 may be secured in any position to which it has been adjusted by means of sufficiently tightening screw 46.
The outer end of spiral coil 43 is soldered or otherwise secured to a piece of metal 48 having extending therefrom apertured arms 49, between which arms 49 is pivoted by means of pivot pin 50, which extends through arms 49, one end of a link 51. The

recast/s other end of link 51 is pivoted, as shown at 52, to a slide piece 53. Piece 53 is provided with a centrally-located, depending lug 53 which is adapted to slide in a slot 54 provided in an arch portion 54 formed on a crank arm 56. Arch portion 54 serves as a slide track for slide piece 53, the co-acticn of lug 53 and slot 54 serving to slidably guide piece 53. The slide piece 53 is secured by a screw57, which passes through slot 54, to a block 58 into which is threaded an adjusting screw 59 extending through the outer, depending end 56 of crank arm 56. A collar 61 is integral with screw 59 and positioned at the side of the depending end 56 opposite tothat side upon which the head of screw 59 bears.
By loosening screw 57 and revolving screw .59 in a clockwise direction block 58 is caused to traveltoward the head of screw 59 and the efiective length of crank arm 56 is correspondingly increased. By revolving screw 59 in a counter-clockwise direction the effective length of crank arm 56'is correspondingly diminished. Upon adjusting the effective length of crank arm 56 to any desired amount, saidadjusting mechanism may be locked in that position by tightening screw 57.
Crank arm 56 is secured to one end of shaft 60 which extends through ahole 110 provided in a depressed portion 62 of wall 22 and also through a long bearing 63 secured to wall 22. @n the side of shaft 60 opposite to crank arm 56, but integral therewith, there extends a portion 101 forming a counterbalance for crank arm 56 and partly counterbalancing the unbalanced portion of coil 43.
To the other end of shaft 60 is secured the inner end of a marking arm 64, and adjacent to arm 64 is counterbalance 67 which extends in the direction opposite to arm 64 in the form of a segmental sleeve partly surrounding the shaft 60. Counterbalance 67 counterbalances arm 64 and part of the unbalanced portion of coil 43.
The marking arm 64 is preferably made of sheet metal, widened at its outer end, the margins of the wider portion being bent underneath the main body of arm 64 and. brought together to form an ink receptacle 68 which is provided with an aperture 111 to allow marking ink to be placed in receptacle 68. The receptacle 68 terminates in a pointed portion 112 having a minute aperture to permit ink to flow slowly therethrough.

Holes 113, provided in cylindrical cover 70, are adapted to register with holes 40, when the cover 70 is in position.
The mode of operation and advantages of the device will be apparent from the foregoing description.
I claim 1. The combination of a cylindrical case having an upwardly extending wall and a base integral therewith, clockwork mechanism secured on the lower side of said base, recording mechanism secured on the upper side of said base, a' cylindrical cover inclosing the clock-work mechanism and fitting tightly around the lower part of said cylindrical case, a cylindrical cover for inclosing said recording mechanism and fitting loosely around the upper portion of said cylindrical'case, said last named cover and said upper portion having co-engaging means for locking the wall and cover together.
2. The combination of a cylindrical case having an upwardly extending wall and a base integral therewith, clock-work mechanism secured on the lower side of said base, recording mechanism secured on the upper side of said base, a cylindrical cover inclos-' ing the clock-work mechanism and fitting tightly around the lower part of said cylindrical wall, an upper part of said cylindrical wall being formed with apertures to permit passage of air therethrough, a'cylindrical cover for inclosing said recording mechanism and fitting closely around said upper part of said wall and having apertures adapted to register, in the closed position of the cover, with the apertures in the wall, said last-named cover and saidupper portion having, the one an oblique, groove and the other a projection entering said groove to lock the wall and cover together. 3. The combination of a cylindrical case having an upward extension forming a wall and a baseintegral therewith, clockwork mechanism secured on the .lower side of vsaid base, vrecording mechanism secured on the upper side of said base, a cylindrical cover inclosing the clock-work mechanism and fitting tightly around the lower part of said cylindrical case, a cylindrical cover for inclosingsaid recording mechanism and fit-- said cylindrical case, a frame comprising a wall and'a top integral therewith, the lower portion of said last named wall being detachably secured to saidbase, said top being secured to said upward extension, a thermostatic device secured on one side of said last named wall, a shaft operated thereby extending through said last named wall, a shaft rotated by said clock-work mechanism and extending upwardly through said base, a spool removably secured to said last named shaft to be rotated thereby, a recording sheet secured to said spool, a sheet support secured to said last named wall, a receptacle for a portionv of said recording sheet in the form of a roll, said receptacle consisting of a portion of said sheet support, another portion of said sheet support being substantially plane to form a support for said recording sheet.
4. In a recording thermometer, the combination of a recording sheet, means for advancing said sheet, a spiral thermostat, a pivoted arm to which the inner end of said spiral thermostat is secured, means for angularly adjustingthe position of said pivoted arm, a shaft, a marking arm carried by said shaft, a recording pen carried by said arm and adapted to record upon said sheet, a crank arm connected to said shaft, an operative connection between said crank arm and said thermostat, and means for partially counterbalancing said spiral thermostat, said means comprising a counterbalance on said marking arm and a counterbalance on said crank arm.
5. In a recording thermometer, the combination of a recording sheet, means for advancing said sheet, a spiral thermostat, a recording pen arranged to record upon said sheet, said pen being operatively connected to the outer end of said spiral thermostat, an arm to which the inner end of said spiral thermostat is secured, a bar, a screw threaded into said bar and adapted to secure said arm tosaid bar, a pin rotatable in said bar, a head integral and eccentric with said pin, said head passing through a round hole in said arm whereby rotation of said head will cause said armto rotate said coil.

In combination Witha recording sheet and a recording arm movable thereover, a shaft, to which said arm is secured, a crank arm extending from said shaft, a slot in said crank arm, means for vibrating said arm, a link, one'end of which is connected to said vibrating means,'a block slidably engaging one side of said crank arm, a slide piece slidably engaging the other side of said crank arm and with which the other end of said link is pivotally connected, a screw threaded into said block parallel with said slot, means holding said screw from longitudinal movement with respect to said crank arm, and means connectingsaid block and said slide piece and serving tofix the position of said slide piece on said crankarm.
7. In combination with a thermostat and a shaft rotated thereby, a marking arm carried by said shaft, and means for counterbalancing sa'id arm consisting of a balance weight surrounding said shaft only on the side opposite said marking arm.
8. In combination with a thermostat, a rock shaft, a marking arm carried thereby, a crank arm carried by said shaft, a link connecting said crank with said thermostat, said crank arm having a longitudinally extending slot, means movable in said slot operatively connected to said thermostat, a depending end on said crank arm, a screw supported by said depending end, means to prevent the longitudinal movement of said screw with respect to said crank arm, said screw being threaded into said movable means for adjusting said last named means longitudinally in said slot.

In an apparatus of the class described, an outer cylindrical casing having a closed bottom, an inner case having a base and a cylindrical portion integral therewith, said inner case fitting tightly within said outer casing, the base of said inner case beingspaced upwardly with respect to the bottom of said outer casing, a plate extending upwardly from the base of said inner case, the
. upper edge of said plate being bent outwardly to engage the cylindrical portion of said inner case, said plate dividing said inner case into two compartments, recording mechanism positioned within one of said compartments and secured to said plate, said recording mechanism including a table, a winding spool, a recording sheet wound on said spool and trained over said table and a pen for marking on said sheet, a device expansible by heat contained in the other of said compartments and secured to said plate, an operative connection between said device and said pen, and clockwork mechanism positioned between the base of said inner case and the bottom of said outer casing, and an operative connection between said clockwork mechanism and said spool.

In an apparatus of the class described, an outer'cylindrical casing having a closed bottom, an inner case having a base and a cylindrical portion integral therewith, said inner case fitting tightly within said mea re outer casing, the base of said inner case beupwardly from the base of said inner case,
said plate dividing said inner case into two compartments, recording mechanism positioned within one of said compartments, said recording mechanism including a table, winding spools, a recording sheet wound on said spools and trained over saidtable, and a pen for marking on said sheet; a device expansible by heat positioned in the other of said compartments, a rock shaft journaled in and extending through said plate, an arm secured to the end of said shaft which extends into the compartment containing said recording mechanism, said pen being mounted on said arm, a crank arm on the end of said shaft which extends into the compartment containing said tube, a link pivotally secured to the outer extremity of said tube, an adjustable connection between said link and said crank arm, clockwork mechanism positioned between the base of said inner case and the bottom of said outer casing, and an operative connection between said clockwork mechanism and said spools.

The combination of a cylindrical case having a cylindrical wall and a base integral therewith, clock-work mechanism secured on the outer side of the base, recording mechanism secured on the inner side thereof, a cylindrical cover inclosing the clockwork mechanism and fittin tightly around the lower part of said cyllndrical wall, a cylindrical cover for inclosing said recording mechanism and fittin loosely around the upper portion of said cylindrical wall, a wall, the lower portion of which is detachably secured to said base, the upper portion being secured to the first-named wall, a thermostatic device. secured on one side of said last-namedwall, a shaft operated thereby extending through said last-named wall, a shaft rotated by said clock-work mechanism and extendin upward through said base, a spool remova ly secured to said shaft to be rotated thereby, a recording sheet secured to said spool, a table for recording said recording sheet and secured to said last-named wall, and a marker secured to said first-named shaft and arranged to mark said recording sheet.
