Be it known that I, ERWIN T. MUIR,-of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tag-Fasteners, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact deplied to cloth or other fabric, it cannot be disconnected from the cloth or fabric, unless purposely removed, and so construct the fastener that it will not shift laterally and sidewise, or become twisted in any manner, but that it will return to place, and keep at all times the tag in a correct position, and also that it cannot become obscured from view in the goods, when attached to the goods.

The principal feature of my invention is that it can in no way scratch or prickthe fingers in adjusting or detaching, neither after it is placed in the goods can it catch on adjacent folds. It will also hold the goods in a smooth shape and protrude just far enough out to hold the tag and present a sightly appearance.

A nother feature is that the tag or label may be readily attached or detached, or changed for another, without injury to the fastener or tag.

In the drawings hereto annexed and forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front View of my improved fastener with a tag held thereby. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is aside view of the same applied to a piece of cloth.

Referring specifically to the drawings, A represents the fastener formed of a single piece of wire. B is the tag of card-board or metal suspended therefrom, and O is an edge view of a piece of cloth to which the fastener is secured.

My fastener consists of a wire of any suitable metal bent at its center so that its end portions lie parallel with each other a distance apart. The ends, a, of the wire, which are pointed or sharpened, are bent both to one side, keeping the distance between them the same. The center or bent end, I), of the doubled wire is bent to the same side as the points and doubled upon itself so that it nearly meetsthe points. end, b, is curved slightly outward so that the edge of the cloth may be more easily entered between the said bent end and the points when applying the fastener to the cloth. The bent or curved end presses upward against the cloth, 0, holding it securely against removal from the hooks.

At the end of the fastener, where the tag is suspended, opposite the end having the hooks, I form a depending loop, 0, for the tag to hang in. The tag is provided with a perforation in the form of a slot through which the loop, 0, is passed as shown clearly in the drawings. per horizontal portion, a, pointedends, a, bent downward to form hooks at one end of the fastener, a depending loop, 0, at the opposite end of the fastener, and a curved tongue, Z), extending substantially horizontally below the upper horizontal portion, and pressing upward toward the same and forming a spring to hold the cloth, or the hooks of the fastener from being easily removed from the cloth.

The fastener is applied to the cloth by passing the edge thereof between the hooks and the tongue as'far as it will go, and then gently drawing the cloth out. I This latter movement causes the hooks to enter the cloth and the fastener to be secured thereto.

In order to remove the fastener without injuring the cloth, the fastener is pressed inward while in an inclined position until thehooks are withdrawn and then by guarding the hooks with the finger the fastener can be removed.

By the arrangement of the hooks outside of a curved tongue, the fastener is capable of being used easily to put the tag into position in the loop, and then to place the fastener on and withdraw it from the cloth.

This fastener, by reason of the specified novelty, is easily supplied with the tag and placed 011 or displaced from the cloth without working of its parts by hand to release its hooks from the cloth.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-

1. A tag fastener, comprising an upper,

straighthorizon tal portion, a pair of hooks at one end thereof and below said portion, a depending double loop at the opposite end of said straight portion, and a tongue extending from the loop below the said straight portion and bearing toward the same but not reaching as far as the hooks, as and for the purpose set forth.
