MACHINE FOR PRINTING SIDE SURFACES 0F METALLIC CAPSULES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,276, dated May 14, 1895.
Application filed May 16, 1894- To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, FALK LEWIN, a subject of the Queen of Holland, residing at l-Ierzogenbosch, in the Kingdom of Holland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Printing the Side Surfaces of Metallic Capsules, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for producing colored impressions of letters. drawings, escutcheons, trade marks and the like on ready metallic capsules used for closing vessels, preservejars or as etiquettes upon mouths of bottles and the like.
The construction of theapparatus is shown in the accompanying drawings.
Figure l is a plan view of the machine; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a cross-section, of the same.
The apparatus consists essentially of three shafts a b 0 arranged one beside the other in such a manner, that, when sufficientlylengthened, they will out each other in the same point. These shafts are supported by two frames 9 h movable around vertical trunnions Z Z and capable of approaching each other or being removed from each other by means of a spindle s. shafts a b and in the frame it the shaft 0. The ends of the three shafts carry cones d e f. The cones d and e carried by the shafts a and b respectively touch each other, while the conefcarried-by the shaft '0' can be put in or out of contact with the cone d. v
The cone f of the shaft 0 serves to receive the metallic capsules to be imprinted. To the cone d of, the shaft a is fastened a steel case having engraved into it the letters, drawings, marks, escntcheons or the like to be printed on the metallic capsules. This case can of. course be replaced by another one if the metallic capsules are to be provided with another drawing. The case is fastened to the cone by means of screws and nuts.
The cone e of the shaft 19 is provided witha cover of india rubber. This cone serves to transmit the color fed by a distributing ap-. paratus 11 consisting of a series of rollers.

In Fig. l of the annexed drawings the case 01 has engraved into it, by way of example, a escutcheon showing the letters F L. In the present case a negative printing coloring is therefore obtained.

The manner of working will easily be understood from Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The apparatus works in such a manner that after the desired engraved case has been secured to the cone d, the frames g and hare approached to each other by means of the spindle s to such an extent that after a metallic capsule has been placed on the cone d, acoutact takes place between this metallic capsule and the engraved cone (1. The color is transmitted from the coloring cone e to the cone d, so that all the elevated parts are uniformly covered with color, while the deepened parts of the case of the cone d remain uncolored. The color and simultaneously with it the drawings of the cone d are thus transferred on themetallic capsules carried by the cone f. In the example illustrated in the drawings the whole capsule will be colored and only the rim of the escutcheon and the letters F L will remain uncolored.
Fig. 1 shows the escutcheon printed on the cone f. The sharpness of the printing, 4.. e., the more or less powerful impression of the engraving on the metallic capsules can be regulated by screwing suitably the spindle s.
In place of the cones d ef differently used methods, by their elevation above the surface of the capsules. The letters, drawings, &c., cannot therefore be damaged in using the capsules.
The printing of the several capsules is effected very rapidly and owing to the construction of the machine a large number of capsules is manufactured within a short space of time.
The working requires an extremely small amount of force and may be effected by hand or by any suitable mechanical device.
I claim In a machine for producing impressions on capsules and other articles, two movable frames pivoted on independent parallel pivots, a rotatable spindle having oppositely FALK LEWIN.
