To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY D. STooKBRIDeE, a resident of Rochester,in thecounty of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing and Storing Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to pails andlike vessels for holding and transporting merchandise such as tobacco, lard, butter, fruit and the like and has for its object to provide such an article with a cover and with inexpensive fastenings therefor that can be conveniently secured and in a manner to prevent secret med dling with the contents; and it consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a partial elevation. Fig. 3 is a partial section showing a modification.

Numeral 1 denotes the body of a pail preferably made of paper saturated with an insipid substance such as a vegetable gum or resin and rolled and baked to render it dense and non-absorbent. The pail may be painted as usual but for use with most articles of food the inside both of the pail and its cover is left unpainted, and if paper material is treated as above stated it will not impair the flavor of the contents of the vessel.

3 indicates a cover having a circumferential flange or shoulder 4 near its periphery to form a seat to receive the edge of the pail. The shoulder fits the inner surface of the top of the pail and prevents access of dirt or intermeddling with the pail contents and holds the cover in its proper horizontal position. To this cover are secured rivets 6, two to four being a suitable number, made of copper or other metal. The upper head of each of these rivets is slightly raised above the material of the cover to permit a copper or other wire 7 to be secured to its body under said head as by winding once or twice around it. If desired this head may be swaged or riveted down upon the wire.

8 denotes corresponding headed studs or rivets secured in the pail wall in such number and in such relation to rivets 6 that the wire held by the latter can be conveniently twisted about said studs 8.

As indicated in Figs. 2 and 3,the fastenings above described can be used to bind together a single pail and cover but they are also adapted for use as indicated in Fig. 1 to bind a cover on a pail and also bind it to a second pail-having its cover, the two covers being placed together. To efiect this the wires connected to the studs of one cover are passed about the corresponding studs in the pail to which said cover pertains and then bent back and twisted about the studs in the other pail, thus securely binding the parts together end to end and fasteningin place both covers. In case four studs are used in each cover and a corresponding number in the pails it is obvious that two wires may be attached to two oppositely situated studs in each cover and all four wires used to bind the covers on and the pails together as above described. It has been customary heretofore to tack on the covers and then secure together the pails thus covered by detachable clamps. Such devices will not answer the purposes of my invention for several reasons among which an important one is that they do not afford the same security against undetected meddling or pilfering as the clamps can be removed and the tacks easily withdrawn and then both replaced. Tacks also are objectionable in the case of a single pail because they can be easily removed with a knife or the like and then replaced. Furthermore neither tacks nor pointed clips can well be forced into paper material such as herein set forth.

The improved device is also adapted for the use of seals as indicated in Fig. 2. If however the fastening wire be sufficiently stifi to require the use of a tool to twist the ends together after they have been passed about a stud or rivet such fastening will in itself constitute a practical seal.

In Fig. 3 the heads of the cover rivets 6' are represented as sunk in the cover so as to leave the upper surface of the latter free from obstruction or projection whereby when two pails are placed together their covers will be in close contact.

I am aware that a cover has been secured upon a tub or pail by straps tacked to the cover and to the tub and also by bails pivoted to the cover and secured to the tub by screws or rotatable hooks. Such devices are inapplicable to the purposes of my improvement which designedly avoids the use of tacks, screws and the like, which cannot be used with paper pails such as I contemplate and which in any case require the use of a tool to complete the fastening. My improvement also contemplates a use and advantage not heretofore disclosed in devices of this sort, and that is the binding of two pails together for transportation by the same devices which fasten on the cover of the pails or of one of them. I do not broadly claim the use of twisted wire as a securing device but only in the re lation hereinafter pointed out.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. The pail made of paper and provided with rivets fixed in its walls and having a cover also provided with rivets fixed therein 3 and seated on said pail, and connecting wires looped around the rivets upon one part and having their ends wound about the corresponding rivets upon the other part, whereby the cover can be secured upon the pail, sub- 5 stantially as set forth.

2. The pail made of paper and provided with rivets fixed in its walls and having a cover also provided with rivets fixed therein and seated on said pail, and connecting wires 40 looped around the rivets upon one part and having their ends wound about the corresponding rivets upon the other part, said ends being made sufficiently long to be wound about rivets similarly fixed in the wall of an 5 inverted superposed pail whereby two pails may be fastened together, substantially as set forth.
