Description

(No Model!) v I HOSE BUTTON. No. 538,486. Patented Apr. 30, 1895 NITED STATES PATENT Fries.
JAMES EDWIN GOGGIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HOSE-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part; of Letters Patent No. 538,486, dated April 30, 1895.
' Application filed une 7,1893. $9145.11. 476,809. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it mtty concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES EDWIN GOGGIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Buttons; and I do declare the followingto bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to hose buttons. Its
object is to provide a button for securing a hose or other underwear to a support in such manner that there will be no possible danger of injury to the person by the pins, and in such manner also that the strain will be in part borne by the button itself rather than falling entirely upon the pins.
The invention consists in the use of a metallic disk having a transverse recess in one of its sides in which one or more pins may be located, slots being provided for the engagement of their points. Slots are provided upon the edges of the button for the attachment, if desired, of tapes. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a .plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section across the central recess, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section longitudinally of the central recess.
The button consists of a metal disk, its two sides being indicated at A, B. One of the sides B,of the button is indented as indicated at a,the indentation extending across its face and reaching within a short distance of each of its edges. Within this indentation or recess are fixed the pins b, b, their fixed ends being preferably rigidly secured to the button at one end of the recess, and in such position that the free ends extend upwardly at an oblique angle from the button. The end of the recess, at, opposite the point of attachment of the pins is covered by a flange, slotted as shown at c, c, for the passage therethrough of the pin points. The pins are so set that they are not in alignment with the slots 0, 0, so that when they are forced through such slots, it is necessary to subject them to a slight lateral pressure, and when they are relieved from such pressure they spring to the sides of these slots and are thus prevented from becoming loosened.
In attaching the button to the garment D, the points of the pins are free, and after being inserted through the fabric are forced into the slots 0, c, and press the fabric into the recess a, so that much of the strain is taken up by the friction of the garment upon the button, in a great measure relieving the pins, themselves, from direct strain. I show at E, E, ears or slots upon the side of the button, and at e, a tape fastened within one of these slots. By the use of such support for the button, its pins may engage simply the hose and are relieved from the additional strain of engaging as well the means of support.
I claim 1. As an improved articleof manufacturea hose button having a transverse recess in one of its faces, pins fixed at one end of the recess and adapted normally to spring outwardly, a flange across the opposite end of the recess for holding the points of the pins depressed, and having a slot for the passage therethrough of the points of the pins, said slot being out of alignment with the normal position of the pins, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture a hose button having a transverse recess in one of its faces, pins fastened within one end of the recess, a flange across the opposite end of the recess for engaging the points of the pins, said button having slots at the side of the recess and parallel therewith for the engagement of tapes, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES EDWIN GOGGIN.
