WALKER A. SCOTT, OF EVANSVILLF., INDIANA.
GIG-SADDLE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 537,726, dated April 16, 1895.
Application led November 30,1894. Serial No. 530,425. (No model.)
To all whom if may concern.:
Be it known that I, WALKER A. SCOTT, of Evansville, county of Vanderburg, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements. in Gig-Saddles, of which` the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to producea supported by the saddle is prevented.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective View of a harness saddle with my pad attached. Fig. II is a vertical section thereof through one of the nipples, ou the line 2-2 of Fig. III. Fig. III is a longitudinal section thereof.
Referring to the figures on the drawings: 1 indicates a gig saddle consisting, as usual, of a somewhat "angular tree 2 provided with terminal shaft tug loops 3 and 4, a crupper eyelets 7 and 8, and surrnounted by a saddle 9. 10 indicates flanges along both sides of the at right angles thereto. 4
l2 indicates a back band, the Width of the tree, having terminal straps and blinkies for uniting it to the girth.
Upon the inside of the back band and arranged so as to leave a suitable space at'the center of the band, I provide pneumatic pads 13 consisting of a back piece 14 and of an expansible cushion piece 15 secured to the back piece in such a manner as to provide flanges 16 and 17 which are stitched to the back band near either edge, the stitches likewise securing the edges of a cushion shield preferably made of soft leather, and which is designed to protect the pneumatic cushion proper. The back band is thus provided with two pneumatic cushions which may be of any suitable length and of a proper width to lit between the inner edges of the retaining flanges and to allow the edges of the back band to slide longitudinally between thetree and the retaining flanges, thus permitting of a longitudinal movement of the back. band, with respect to the tree, while preventing its casual displacement. For the sake of additional security, however, I make the bolt 18, which secures the saddle and the check 'rein hook, of a sufficient length to pass through an aperture inthe back band between the cushions. Thus it will be seen `that when the nut is `turned to place upon the screw, the band will be firmly secured, but may be readily detached when it is desired to replace it by another band.
For the purpose of inflating the cushions, I provide ordinary nipples 2O containing check valves 2l and provided with caps 22 adapted to screw upon them when the cushions have been properly inflated. I do not desire to limit myself to the details of construction herein shown and described, but reserve to myself the right to modify and vary them at will within the scope of my lnvention.
1. In a gig saddle, the combination with a tree provided with flanges and retaining I tained by the retaining flanges of the tree,
substantially as specified.
2. In a gig saddle, the combination with a tree provided with flanges and retaining flanges at right angles thereto, of a back band retained upon the tree by the said flanges, and provided with pneumatic cushions and nipples communicating with the interior of the cushions, substantially as specified.
3. In a gig saddle, the combination with a back band and a pneumatic cushion having its edges out-turned and secured flat against the back band to form the flanges, of a tree provided with flanges 10, and retaining flanges 11, and a flexible cushion having its edges out-turned and secured flat upon the edges of the pneumatic cushion, substantially as specified.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
WALKER A. SCOTT.
Witnesses:
