Description

G. R. ROGERS. COVER FASTENER.
1Y0/536,896. Patented-Apr. 2, l18915. l
UNITED STATES PATENT EEIEE.
GEORGE RILEY ROGERS, OE oI-IELSEA, IOWA.'
c ovER-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,896, dated. April 2, 1 895.
Application filed January 28, 1895. Serial No. 536,483. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE RILEY ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Tama and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such` as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements'in fasteners for chests, boxes, &:c., and the object of the invention is to produce a sliding hinge, which will allow the top or cover to be swung back and to rest against one side of the chest while the box is left open, and when it is desired to close the cover over the box or chest, the eyes carried by the saidcover slide on a continuous wire, which wire, is formed at its free end into a spring catch providing a lock for the top, there being two of these wires, one at either end of the chest, and suitable hooks are provided, which are carried on the cover and designed to engage with the free ends of the catch rods.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists further in the novel construction, combination and adaptation of the parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specilically defined in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure l, is a perspective view of my fastener shown as attached to a chest and cover, parts beingl broken away so as to show the 1ocation of the fastener. Fig. 2, is an end view of the chest with the cover shown in dotted lines turned back against one of 'the sides. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the end of the chest from above; Fig. 4, an enlarged detail of the fastener. V
Reference now being had to the details of Vthe drawings by letter, A designates a chest the end of the box or chest at c. The said wire or rod is bent at right angles at D, and is bent outward slightly at the points CZ, and d', and is held to the end of the chest, near the top, at the points e, e, by means of the staples E. The free end F terminates in a right angled bend and extends Outward, there being a recessed portion in the end of the box so as to allow the free end of the said rod to spring back therein.
The cover carries the eyes G which slide on the rods or wires C, and the hooks H, which when the cover-is closed snaps over the wire at the point g securely locking the cover to the chest. The cleatsH are recessed at J, in which a finger may be inserted to depress the free end of the said wire to disengage the same from the hook carried by the cover.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood, as when it is desired to remove the cover, the operator presses in from each end of the chest on the outwardly extending free ends of the said rods, and the hooks are freed from the wire, and the cover is allowed to slide back on the horizontal portion of the wire until the corner is reached, and then to. be lowered down the back side and in a plane parallel therewith.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An vimproved fastening for the covers of chests trays 85e., consisting of lthe wire or rod C xe'dly secured to the lower end corner of a chest slightly bent outward and vertically nearly the length of the end thereof then bent at right angles and extending across the top of the end portion and held thereto -by suitable means, the free end of the said rod ter- .minating at right angles to the end of the GEORGE RILEY ROGERS.
