SWORD SGABBAED. 4 No. 536,556. Patented Mar. 26, 1895 2 5 40 JpY ATTORNEYS.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
IIENRY O. WELLER, OF BUTTE, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO BENJAMIN E. OALKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
SWORD-SCABBARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,556, dated March 26, 1895. Application filed August 24,1894- fierial No. 521,180. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, HENRY O. WELLER, of Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sword-Scabbards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates primarily to an improvement in sword scabbards, and it has for its object to so construct a scabbard that a sword may be guided therein much more expeditiously and convenientlythan heretofore, and to so construct the hilt of the sword that it will conform to the improved form of scabbard. t
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the sword. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the improved scabbard adapted to receive the sword. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the upper portion of the scabbard; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view, on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the invention a recess 10, is made in the upper end of the scabbard at the front thereof, the said recess being practically produced in the forward wall of the mouth of the scabbard, as shown in Fig. 2.
This recess is ordinarily V-shaped or angular, but it may be made substantially U-shaped, or may be made to approximate only a V in form. The recess is located about midway between the end portions of the mouth of the scabbard, and the wall of the recess is provided with a bevel 11 upon the outer face of the scabbard, the bevel being in an inwardly shape.
The advantages of the improved construction of the scabbard are obvious, but it may be mentioned that great difiiculty is often experienced in quickly and accurately and in proper time introducing the point of the sword into the scabbard that it may be fully sheathed, the difficulty being incident to the narrow opening into which thesword must be introduced without'the swordsman casting a glance in the direction of the scabbard.
When the opening is made in the top of the scabbard, and the sword point is directed toward the mouth of said scabbard, the recess may be found readily with the point and the point carried rearward until it strikes the rear Wall ofthe scabbard, whereupon the sword may be carried home. The bevel 11 upon the outer wall of the recess serves as a guide to direct the sword to the mouth of the Scabbard.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A scabbard, provided with an opening in one of its walls at the mouth, and a sword hilt provided with a lug shaped to enter and substantially fill the said opening as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY O. WELLER.
