- PlCKER-STICK FOR LQOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,286, dated March 26, 1895.
Application filed June 25, 1894. Serial No.'515,618. (N model.)
To all whom, it may concern.- Be it known that I, WINFIELD LINCOLN KEITH, a citizen of the United States of- Amer ica, residing at Milltown, in the countyof Washington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Sticks for Looms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will [0 enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in picker sticks. Its objects are to lessen the wear on the stick itself and on that part of the picker through which the stick projects and to render the stick less liable to break.
It consists in a, stick having on its front edge a metallic plate which comes in contact with the picker in the forward movement of the stick and on the back edge a plate which comes in contact with the picker in its backward movement and means for firmly securing the lower extremities of said plates to the faces of the stick by pressure.
' 2 5 It further consists in certain details of con struction which will be hereinafter more f nll y set forth.
In the drawings herewith accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Fig- 0 ure 1 is a side elevation of my improved picker stick, with parts broken away, and Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
Same letters refer to like parts. In said drawings, A represents a picker 5 stick. To the front and back edges of the stick are attached plates b and 0 respectively. Integral with the lower extremity of the front plate I) is a collar d surrounding the stick and the lower extremity of the back plate. In the 40 top of the collar is a set screw 6 adapted to be screwed down upon the lower end of the back plate in such manner that the lower ends of both plates are firmly secured to the stick. The top ends of both plates are se- 5'cured to the stick by a screw threaded bolt passing through them and the stick. To prevent bolt f from working loose, the hole in the end of plate 0' may be threaded, which taken in connection with the ordinary nut on the end of the bolt outside of the plate, serves as a check to prevent the bolt from working loose. To prevent the plates from wearing in the wood and to give a firm bearing for the set screw, I insert in the stick at a point under the set screw in the collar a small metal 5 5 screw g, upon which both plates bear. The screw may be so small that it will weaken the stick but very little, and yet afiord a perfectly unyielding bearing for the plates. To strengthen the front plate, the middle k may be made thicker than the ends.
As atpresentconstructed, where the top of the picker is of wood alone, the wood soon becomes worn and rough and wears the hole in the picker very rapidly, thus necessitating the constant renewal of both picker and stick, it very often happening that a picker breaks out before the shuttle receiving end of the picker is worn out, while under the present construction, it will last until both edges of the shuttle receiving end of the picker is worn out.
The advantages of the present invention are that it does not wear the picker or stick, it is easily attached to the stick, it does not weaken the stick, it does not Wear loose on the stick, it gives a steady picker motion, and, if the stick becomes broken for any reason, it can be easily removed and attached to another stick.
Having thus described my invention and its use, I claim 1. In a picker stick, a reinforcing plate applied to one face thereof, means for securing the upper extremity of said plate to the end of the stick anda collar integral with the other end of said plate and provided with a screw to hold said plate against said stick, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A picker stick, reinforcing plates applied 0 to the front and back faces thereof, one of said plates having on its lower extremity and integral therewith a collar adapted to encircle the stick and other plate, said collar having a set screw adapted to bear upon the 5 other plate, and means for securing the upper extremities of said plates to the end of the stick, substantially as set forth.
3. A picker stick, reinforcing plates applied to the faces thereof, means for securing the upper extremities of said plates to the end of the stick, one of said plates having on its lower extremity a collar integral therewith and adapted to encircle the, stick and other plate, said collar having a set screw adapted to bear upon the other plate, and a screw passing through the stick at a point at or near I where the set screw is applied, substantially 16 as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
WINFIELD LINCOLN KEITH.
