ATTACHMENT FOR SINKS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,006, dated March I9, 1895.

Be it known that I, J OHN N. BARGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sinks, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and eflicient device to prevent gases of all kinds from escaping in sinks or other connections with sewers, drain pipes or the like. in the sink until it is desired to allow it to escape.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification: Figure l is a perspective View of my attachment applied to a sink, part of the sink being shown. Fig. 2 is a view of a stop. used to keep the attachment off the sink hole, and Fig. 3 a section showing construction of the plate which covers the sink hole. I

A represents a bracket arm having an upper and lower extension at a, slots or bolts a a being provided at the extremities of said arms. The bracket armA is preferably made of metal and of one piece. It may be made of any desired material and of any desired shape or contour.

B represents a plunger, the lower part a being the thickest, the plunger working loosely in the holes or slots 0.. The plunger B is screw threaded at each end carrying at its upper end the handle I) andat its lower end the plate 0.

The plate 0 is preferably of the shape shown,

made of metal or any other desired, material, being slightly concave on its underside, and at its periphery is provided with a gasket d.

The device is secured as shown in Fig. 1 to the wall near the sink by a bracket E, to which the bracket arm A is connected in any suitable manner preferably by a' set screw connection e. This set screw connection enables the bracket A to be turned around in such manner as to carry the plunger and plate It also operates to retain the water out of the way, whenever, for instance, re-' pairs to the sink are to be made, thus obviating the removal or detachment of the device from its support.

At its upper extremity the plunger B is notched as shown at (2' (see Fig. 2) a dog or catch e being loosely connected to the extension a of the bracket arm A. This catch is present to hold the plunger arm and plate 0 elevated from the sink if desired. The plunger being elevated the catch e is slid under one of the notches e. When released the tension of the spring forces the plunger carrying the plate 0 down upon the sink hole. The tension of the spring keeps the plate 0 firmly and snugly on the sink hole, allowing no air, gas or stench to escape into the room. If it is desired to release the water in the sink, the plunger is elevated. Upon its release it springs back into its normal position.

The various parts of the device may be altered, and they may be constructed of any material, the main feature of the device being the use of a gasketed plate as O mounted in a suitable support.

What I claim as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An attachment for sinks, comprising a bracket or support, radially adjustable in a vertical plane and means for holding the bracket in position, and a spring actuated plunger supported in said bracket, and provided at its lower end with a plate or disk adapted to fit or close the sink opening or out-' let, substantially as described.

2. An attachment for sinks, the same comprising an adjustable or movable bracket or support, and means for holding the same in position, a spring actuated plunger vertically movable in said bracket and formed or provided with a series of notches, a plate or disk carried by the lower end of said plunger, and a dog or detent adapted to engage said notches, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
