' COAL-WAGON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,991, dated March 19, 1895.

Application filed December 19, 1894. Serial No. 532,288. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE E. MARX, of

the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Goal-Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to the construction of wagons or cars which are intended for the transportation and delivery of coal, gravel, &c., and it has for its object to provide for the easy and convenient delivery of the coal, gravel, &c., from either side of the wagon or car without adding materially to the cost of construction and without requiring a more or less complicated arrangement of gates and slides which in practice are likely to become jammed and are always more or less difficult to operate.

The construction in which the invention is embodied will be described more particularly hereinafter, with reference to the accompanyingdrawings, 'in which- Figure 1, is a partial side elevation, partly broken out, of a coal wagon to which my 'improvement is applied. Fig. 2, is a transverse section on the plane indicated by the line 00, so, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, isa detail view in section on the plane indicated by the line y, y, of Fig. 2.

The body of the wagon or car may be of any usual or suitable construction, as represented at A, and is preferably provided with an inclined bottom, as at b, b, which slopes from the ends toward an opening 0 in the middle. This opening 0 extends from side to side of the body A and is of a suitable width ;for the free delivery therethrough of coal. secured a depending flange D, the two flanges being united at their ends by walls E, E. The flanges D, D, are Widest at the middle and their lower edges are inclined upwardly from the middle point to the ends as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The opening between the two flanges D, D is closed by a two-part swinging bottom F, F, the two parts being hinged together and secured tothe flanges D, D at the Along each side of the opening 0 is hinged part F has side flanges e, e which lap outside of the flanges F, F and each flange G is slotted, as at g, to receive a pin d project- .ing from the flange D, so that a limited swinging movement of each bottom part shall be permitted. A gate H is supported between the flanges G, G by guides g, 9 so that said gate may close the mouth of the chute formed by each bottom F, and side walls G, G, or may be raised to open the same. A lever I is pivoted to each door as at h and rests in an eye h carried by one of the walls G, and forms a convenient means for raising the door when required. Each swinging bottom or chute F, G is normally held up in the position represented at the right in Fig. 2 by a hook or books J which may be pivoted to the body A and may engage a pinj projecting from the wall G. Each bottom part or chute F, G may also have eyes lo, to be engaged by hooks k, k to support a spout K:

It will be understood that before the wagon or car is fllled both bottom parts or chutes F, G are hooked up in the position shown to the right in Fig. 2, thereby completely closing the opening Gin the body A against the escape of coal. When it has been determined from which side the coal is to be delivered the bottom part or chute F, G'on that side is unhooked and allowed to swing down'into the position shown to "the left of Fig. 2, the

spout is hooked on if required, and the gate is raised. The bottoin part or chute F, G which has been unhooked inclines downwardly at the proper angle to insure the delivery of the coal or other substance, while the other part, which still remains hooked up in its normal position, also has a suffieient inclination toward the hinge to insure the delivery of all the coal from the wagon.

It will be observed that no gates are used which could become clogged qr jammed by the pressure of the coal and that the car or wagon is therefore always ready for immediate delivery from either side without inconvenience or delay. Moreover, the application of the improvement involves only. trifling additions to the weight and cost of the body.

I claim as my invention- 1., The combination with a body having an opening through its bottom, and flanges depending alo'ngthe sides of said opening, of a two-part bot-tom to close the opening between the flanges, each part having a bottom and side flanges tolap the first mentioned flanges and the two parts being brought together and to the first mentioned flanges, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with a body having an opening through its bottom, and flanges depending along the sides of said opening, said flanges being widest at the middle and having their edges inclined upwardly to the ends, of a two-part bottom to close the opening between the flanges, each part havingabottom GEORGE I l.
