PERMUTATION PADLOUK. No. 535,764. Patented Mar. 12, 1895.
lllllllll FFICE `GRAVI/'FORD D. LOGAN, OF COAL HILL, ARKANSAS, ASSIGNOR OFv ONE-HALF TO JOHN OOYLE, OF SAME PLACE.
PERlVlUTATlON-PADLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,764, dated March 12, 1895.
Application filed July 13, 1894:. Serial No. 517,443. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAWFORD D. LOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coal Hill, in the county of Johnson and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Padlock, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a permutation padlock, and it has for its object to provide a sim- Io ple, inexpensive and ei'iicient lock, capable of being manipulated with facility and having means for changing the combination without removing the tumblers.
Further objects and advantages of the in- I5 vention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective zo view of a lock embodying my invention. Fig.
2 is a front view of the same, showing the turnblers in section in the plane of the axis of the locking-pin. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the means for changing the combination. Fig. z5 4 is a detail view of one of the tumblers.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures of the drawlngs.
I designates the body of the lock, provided 3o with a cylindrical portion 2 in which are mounted therevoluble tumblers 3, a portion 'of one side of said cylindrical portion or casing 2 being cut away to expose one side of each tumbler. The shackle 4 is pivoted between the ears 5, at one end of the body portion, and is provided atits free end with a reduced tongue 6 adapted to iit in a socket 7 communicating with the bore or interior of the cylindrical casing. Said tongue 6 is fur- 4o ther provided with a notch 8 adapted to. be engaged by the extremity of the locking-pin 9 which extends axially through the tumblers and is provided with lateral lugs 10 to register with o-set portions or notches 11 in the tumblers. The tumblers are cylindrical in shape and are provided at one end with webs 11 which are cut away to form said notches 11 and which prevent the withdrawal of the locking-pin except when the said notches are in alignment with the lugs on said pin. 5o
The lookin-pin is provided at its outer end with a cap or disk 12 provided in its inner side with a series of depressions or sockets 13, either of which is adapted to engage a stud 14. on the end of the casing of the lock, and by changing the depression or socket in which this stud Vis engaged the combination of the improved lock is altered.
The tumblers are permanently secured in the casing by a bushing 15 titted in the outer 6o end thereof, or the end adjacent to the cap or disk on the locking-pin, and as the combination of the lock is changed by altering the position of the said disk, the removal of the tumblers is unnecessary and hence liability of losing parts of the mechanism is avoided. i
The operation of the lock will be readily understood from the foregoing, and it will be seen that various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction 7o may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ofthe advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination with a casing having a lateral opening communicating with the bore thereof, ot' a shackle tting at one end in said lateral opening and provided with a notch, a series of revolnlole tumblers provided with 8o notches, a locking'pin tting axially in the tu mblers and adapted to engage the notch in the shackle, said pin being provided with spaced lugs, a cap or disk provided with a series of depressions or sockets, and a stationary stud carried by the casing to engage one of the depressions or sockets, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afxed my signature in 9o the presence of two witnesses.
CRAWFORD D. LOGAN.
