UNITED STATES PATENT O F E,
" snMUriL ART UR wnLnsfior GRIMPASS, DAHO.
i i all ebliomc't may concern ;Be it known that I, SAMUEL An'rrrnn WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Grimpass, inthe county of Boiseand State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to combination locks, and more particularly to that class of looks that are commonly known .as keyless padlocks. I i l Y The object of this invention is to provide 'a padlock that has a pair of rotatable tumblers that facilitate the opening of the lock, said tumblers having simple and effective means whereby the combination may be 7 quickly and readily changed when desired.
Another object of this invention is to provide a keyless padlock that comprises essentially two sections one of which'carrying a pair of tumblers that are rotated in such a manner so as to be able to take the sections apart.
A still further object of this invention is the production" of a device ofthe kind above described, that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and can be manufactured for the minimum amount.
With these and other objects in View, this invention'consists of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of" parts as will. be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the improved padlock with the locking means therefor shown in section.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of a portion of one of the locking elcments in engagement with the shackle element.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 1.
This padlock comprises essentially two sections, and for the sake of identlficatlon the numeral 10 represents the primary sec- PAIDLOCK. i
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented S t 2 1919 Application filed December 3, 1914. Serial No. 875,346.
The auxiliary member 11 comprises a loop, and has at each of the ends of the same an externally threaded portion on which is threaded an internally threaded collar 15 that has an opening in the end thereof. As
:is shown in Fig. 1, this auxiliary section 11 is hollow, and the openings in the collars 15 communicate with the hollow portion of the auxillary section. To insure the retaining of these collars 15 upon the ends of the loop of projections 20. Rotatably mounted upon the shackle legs 17 between the projections 19 and 20 are rotatable tumblers 21, each having an openingformed centrally thereof, and running from said opening a plurality of cut-out portions 22, the tumblers also 'being provided with notches 23 on the outer periphery thereof, and corresponding marks being placed upon the collars 15, the tumblers "can be brought tothe desired position. The operation of this device is as follows. To establish a combination the tumblers 21 are positioned upon the shackle legs 17 in such a manner that one of the several cutout portions 22 is in engagement with one of the intermediately disposed projections 19, and the shackle legs are placed in the primary section 10, of course, the projections 20 formed thereon passing into the same by means of the slots 14, and when the same reach the circularly disposed grooves 13, the tumblers 21 being secured from rotation on the shackle legs 17 when one of the projections 19 is positioned in one of the cut out portions 22 are rotated, thus bringing the projections 20 out of alinement with the slots 14, and of course prevent the removal of the sections 10 and 11 from one another. When it is wished to remove the sections from one another, the tumblers are rotated until the desired combination is secured, thus bringing the projections 20 in alinement with the slots 14 and the sections can be easily withdrawn.
When it is wished to change the combination all that is necessary is to move the tumof the auxiliary section 11, pins or other means 16 are passed through the collars and blers onthe shackle legs 17 suchfaidis-i a pair of sections, i a
tance that the projections m are outofen gagement With the cut-out portions22 and rotate, the tumblers upon the shacklelegs and place the projections 19in one of the several cut-out portions in the tumblers,
It Will be seen by careful reference to Fig. 1 that the endsvof-itheprojections-119: are beveled so as to engage theinclined faces of the cut-out ortions 22 formed in the'tumblers. There ore When one of the projections is positioned in any one of the cut-out portions 22- theibeveled face of the projection Will engage the inclinedfaceofthe cutout portion and a frictional engagement thus made. By. this frictional engagement made in the formtandeconstruction of this the likelihoodofthe projection bei-ng accidentally removed from the cut-out 'is-obviated. l r *2 I a It is obvious that minor changes may be invention withoutdeparting from the; mateto confine the invention to the exact form legs,each ofsaid shackle legs provided with ;;;pr ojections formed intermediate the length thereof, tumblers on said shackle legs having cut-out, portions adjacent said ishackle legs legs, --whereby, LhBQQOSltlOII of said "tumblers 3 other than the one that carriesthe-same.v 3.A-lock comprising a 'pairof sections,
one. ofsaid sectionshaving a pair of shackle to receive said projections Onsaid'sh'ackle on saidvshackle legs may be changed, and I means on one end of-tsaid-ashackle legs for detachably retaining the same in-the section one of sa'id sectionshavi-ng a .pair of shackle herein shown-.anddescribed, but it'is Wished to include all such as properly come" Within the scope of the claims.
I claim i 1. A look comprising a primary anjd an auxiliary section, said auxiliarysection hav ing a pair of shackle legsicarriedthereby for insertion in said; primary. section, tumblers on; said shackle legs,-m eans on said shackle legs. to retain said tumblers in different positions on the same and a second means onv said shackle legs to detachably retain certain ends thereof said primary section! Gopies ofthis. patent I may; be obtaine tainthe'same; therein. a a
legs carried thereby, means on said shackle legs for deta'cliably retaining.v the sameiin th section otherth'ansthe one. that carries the a same, each of said shackle" legs carrying a projection thereon intermediate the. length;
thereof, said projections ,having thesends of the; same beveled, a pairkof. tumblers on said shackle legs in proximity Wltlffiald .projections,;said tumblers having a plurality-of cut-out portions in the path of said projections, :said cut-out; portions provided :With inclinexfaces, whereby when one of said projecti'ons'is placed-in one-ofsaidscut-out' portions, the frictional engagement between theib'eveled end of said, projection andrth'e" incline face of SaiduCUtHOUi'JaPOMlOII ill-re In testimony whereof I aflix in presence o'f tvvo Witnesses;
