To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WINFRED O. VVHIT- MORE and GEORGE WVHrrMoRn, citizens of the United States, residing at Madrid, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in nut locks, and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character including a nut and a rotatable locking member carried by the nut, said locking member coact ing with a dog carried by the nut for forcing said dog either into or out of engagement with a coacting bolt.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved nut lock whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating a nut lock constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line at right angles to Fig. 1 and through the locking member, illustrating certain details of our invention as herein disclosed; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating the parts in a diflerent adjustment; and Fig. 4 is a side elevational view of the nut as herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a nut having a neck 2 with which is rotatably engaged the locking memher 3, the outer end of the bore of the looking member 3 being enlarged, as at 5, so that the same will be effectively maintained in operative position upon the neck 2 upon the outer end of the neck being upset or swelled, as indicated at 4. It is to be noted that the outer face of the locking member 3 and the outer end of the neck 2 are flush so that a continuous surface is afforded and Specification of Letters Patent.

the opening 6 and engage a bolt B between the threads thereof and thereby effectively hold the nut 1 against retrograde rotation.
It is to be observed that with the tooth 8 in operative engagement with the bolt B, the tail portion 9 of the dog 7 is extended beyond the periphery of the neck 2 so that upon movement of the locking member 8 in one direction, the contact of the cam portion 10 of said locking member with the tail 9 will retract the tooth 8 from engagement with the bolt B and thus permit the nut 1 to be readily removed from the bolt. It will also be perceived that upon axial rotation being imparted to the locking member 3 in an opposite direction, the contact of the cam 10 with the toothed end of the dog 7 will force the tooth 8 into binding engagement with the bolt B.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a nut lock constructed in accordance with our invention is of anextremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly Well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice.
We claim:
A nut provided with a neck having a transverse recess in its periphery and having an opening in communication between said recess and the bore of the neck, an arcuate dog positioned within the recess of the neck and having a tooth adapted to extend through the opening in the neck, said dog being disposed on a curve greater than the curvature of the recess whereby the extremities of the dog may extend out of the recess and beyond the periphery of the neck, a locking member rotatably engaged with-the neck of the nut, said locking member having a recess in its inner face partly defining the bore thereof, the inner side of the recess being eccentric relative to the periphery of the neck and aflording a cam, the central portion of which being adapted upon rotation of the looking member to engage the end portions of the dog for moving the tooth inwardly through the opening in the nesses.
