PATENT Oriana,
OF DENVER, COLORADO.
TRANSPARENT TOP WAD FOR CARTRIDGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,384, dated March 12, 1 895.
Application filed January 16, 1894:. Serial No. 497,094. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH NORRIS LOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Shot-Cartridges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish a loaded shot shell or cartridge, so constructed that the user at a glance can determine the size of the shot therein contained. It differs from the ordinary cartridge now in use, in that the last wad in the end of the shell which confines the shot in the shell, is made of a transparent substance.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated my transparent wad. I
The drawing illustrates aperspective view of a loaded shot shell or cartridge in which the letter A refers to the transparent wad or covering of celluloid, pyroxiline or other transparent material. This cartridge which is illustrated in the drawing is loaded by means of several of the ordinary wads, but the last wad which is a transparent wad, is easily discernible, as I have designated it by letter A. This wad, A is so transparent that upon a glance the user sees the size of theshot contained within the cartridge.
In using my improved cartridge I have been greatly assisted in the country when suddenly I had occasion to change the size of my shot, as, it only required a momentary glance at the end of my shell to determine the size of the shot therein contained. Previously, when using the old cartridge, I have been greatly embarrassed at times by finding the cartridge number, which it was customary to imprint on the opaque covering, entirely obliterated, thus causing me to extract the wadding to discern the size of the shot therein contained. By the use of my improved cartridge this difiiculty is entirely obviated. Furthermore the composition of my wadding is water proof, and the occasional spoiling of the sportsmans cartridge, by the accidental contact with water, is entirely obviated by employing my cartridge.
Therefore I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A transparent wad or covering placed on top of the shot and in the shell in lieu of paper or any other opaque substance heretofore used, so as to enable the user to determine at a glance the size of the shot therein contained.
2. A transparent wad or covering made of water-proof material, used to confine the shot in a loaded cartridge in its customary place, and placed on top of the shotand in the shell in lieu of the customary opaque substance, so as to enable the user to determine at a glance, the size of the shot therein contained, substantially as herein described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
