HENRY F. EDWARDS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PIPE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters'Patent No. 535,094, dated March 5 1895 Application filed November 20,1893. Serial No. (N0 m m To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. EDWARDS, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Myinvention relates more especially to a pipe hanger, composed of two members, the lower one of which consists of two semi-circular bands, hinged together and adj ustably connected to the upper member, so that the hanger may be readily removed from the pipe.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is an elevation of my improved device. Fig. II is a side view of the same. Fig. III is an elevation of the lower member. Fig. IV is a detail view, showing a means of hinging the semi-circular bands of the lower member at their lower ends. Figs. V and VI are sectional views taken on line V-VI Fig. I, and show modified forms of the semi-circular bands. Fig. VII is a detail view and shows the lower member of the hanger formed of a circular band, provided with rollers.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a girder or beam to which the clamp 2 is secured by means of a bolt 3, that forms a support for the drop arm 4, of the upper member of the hanger. On the lower end of the arm 4, is a nut 5, which forms a support for the swivel 6, to the lower divided or bifurcated ends of which are secured by means of bolts 7, semi-circular bands 8, of the lower member of the hanger. v
9 represents fiat plates, one end of each of which is pivotally secured to one end of the semi-circular bands at their lower ends, to form a hinge connection between them.
10 represents the pipe to be supported.
Figs. V and VI show modifications of the semi-circular bands of the lower member, which instead of employing a T shaped bar,
as shown in my preferred form, I have shown an L shaped bar 11, in Fig. V, and in Fig. VI a U shaped bar 12, which forms may be employed if desired.
As shown in Fig. VII the lower member may, if desired, be formed without a hinge 9, and it may be provided with rollers 14 journaled inbearings 15 secured to the liange of the member as shown also in Fig. VII. The purpose for which I employ the rollers is to prevent breakage of the hangers by the expansion and contraction of the pipe, which result is readily attained by supporting the pipe when placed within the hanger, upon the rolls instead of allowing it to come in direct contact therewith.
A pipe hanger thus formed makes a strong,
.durable hanger, which is readily applied to and removed from the pipe.
I claim as my invention- 1. A pipe-hanger comprising an attaching device, a drop arm, a swivel having lower divided ends, a nut by which the swivel is supported on the drop arm, the pipe band and the bolts by which the ends of the band are secured between the divided ends of the swivel; substantially as described.
2. A pipe-hanger comprising an attaching device, a drop arm, a swivel having lower divided ends, a nut by which the swivel is sup ported on the drop arm, the pipe band consisting of two semi-circular bands, and plates pivotally secured to the lower ends of the bands, and the bolts by which the upper ends of the semi-circular bands are secured between the divided ends of the swivel; substantially as described.
HENRY 1 EDWARDS.
In presence of-- A. M. EBERsoLE, CLARA G. EDWARDS.
