SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 516,047, dated March 6, 1894. application filed April 28, 1893. Serial No. 472,150. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ORSON H. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the follow-A ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, Whch will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the acv companying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in bed bottoms being especially designed for use in connection with bed bottoms consisting of Woven wire fabrics, canvas or others similar material, the object being to provide simple and economical means whereby the bed bottom may be adjusted so as to compensate for any stretching of the same.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a bed bottom constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view on an enlarged scale of the plate which is secured to the ends of the side rails in which the stretching rollers are journaled. Fig. s is a detail perspective view of the same showing a portion of one of the stretching rollers.

In the said drawings the reference numeral 1 designates the longitudinal or side rails of an ordinary bedstead and 2 cross bars intermediate the ends thereof, connecting them together.

The numerals 3, 3, denote the end or stretching rollers to which the ends of the Wire fab'- ric 4, are secured. This fabric is supported intermediate of its ends by spiral springs 5, resting upon the transverse bars 2.r

The numeral 6 denotes a metal plate having a curved recess 7 forming a bearing for the journal of the stretching roller, and with vertical flanges 8, 8, and horizontal flanges 9, 9, and also with bolt holes 10 for the passage of bolts by which it is secured to the said 5o rails. The stretching rollers at each end are provided with cylindrical journals 12, having angular heads 13, which are seated and are capable of rotating in the recess or bearing 7.

The numeral 14: denotes a lug formed on the plate 6 at right angles to the recess or 55 bearing 7 and is provided with an aperture for the passage of a bolt 15. This bolt engages with apertures 16 in a cap 17, secured to the stretching roller. The plate 6 is also provided with a hook or lug 18, with which 6o engages the end of a horizontal rod 19, exe tending along and secured to the side edges 0E the bed bottoms, and is provided near each end with a coiled spring 20, preferably formed integral therewith.

The numeral 21 denotes a sti metal rod or rods on each of the side rails 1. As shown in Fig. 2, there are two of these rods to each rail, their inner ends bein g connected together by a swivel and their outer ends secured to 7o the plate 6. These rods pass through eyes 23 secured to the said rails, and their object is to prevent the ends of the rails turning up due to the tension of the bed bottom. Instead of having two separate rods 21, a single 7 5 rod may be employed on each roll, the swivel being dispensed with.

The operation is as follows: W'hen the bed bottom sags, due to stretching of the same, the stretching rollers may be rotated by means So of a wrench which is engaged with the angular heads of the journals of said rollers, the bolt 15, being first Withdrawn. When the double stay bars are employed and the ends secured to the stretching rollers said rollers may be tightened by operating the swivel, which also tightens the stay bars.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with the side rails, the 9o connecting bars, and the plates secured to said rails, having hooked lugs and recesses, of the stretching rollers journaled in said recesses, the wire bed bottom secured to said rollers, the horizontal Wires secured to the side edges g 5 of the bed bottom and provided near each end with a coiled spring, the ends of said Wires being connected with the hooked lugs, substantially as described.
