Description

(No Model.)
J.HVALLEAU.
HITGHING STRAP.
No. 535,032. Patent ed Mar. 5, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. VALLEAU, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO T. N. BRAY, OF SAME PLACE.
HlTCHlNG-STRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 535,032, dated March 5, 1895.
Application filed July 19, 1894. Serial No. 518,024 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES H. VALLEAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Hitohing- Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved attachment for hitching straps the object being to provide a device which when properly attached and adjusted will securely hold the hitching strap to the post and prevent it dropping down or working ofi the post.
My present invention is an improvement upon the attachment shown, described and claimed in my application filed April 27, 1894, Serial No. 509,221.
The novel feature of this invention consists in the peculiar construction of the locking cam when used in connection with the other elements which are substantially the same as shown in my prior application.
My invention therefore consists in certain de- I tails hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings formingapart of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved attachment as applied and used upon a strap. Fig. 2 shows the device in detail; Fig. 3, a detail View of the locking tongue or cam.
In practice I attach my device to an ordinary strap A which is provided as usual with snaps or buckles at each end.
A ring or loop B is arranged to slide upon the strap and connected to said ring is a flat spiral spring 0 through which the strap is passed and at the end said spring is formed with a frame or loop 0 and at one side of said loop the member is bent inward as shown at c.
A spring binding cam or tongue D is pivoted to the bent portion 0' said tongue belng bent upon itself at (1 so that the free end is approximately in line with the pivoted end. This free end is turned outward as shown at d and binds against the strap, the force of the spring serving to hold the end d into engagement with the strap and the holding power is thus increased.
Now in operation one end of the strap is attached to the animal and the other end passed around the hitching post and snapped or tied into the ring or loop B. The strap is then drawn taut, the spiral spring compressed and the tongue turned down to bind against the face of the strap. The tendency of the spring is to expand and this tendency keeps the portion of the strap between the tongue and end tight so that it can not become loose upon the p Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a hitching strap attachment, the combination, with a ring, of a coiled spring connecting therewith, and a spring tongue connected to the opposite end of said spring, said tongue being bent centrally upon itself, one end being pivoted to the end of spring, and the other end bent at an angle to engage a strap adapted to be passed through the spring substantially as shown and described.
2. An improved attachment comprising the ring B, the spring 0 having a loop a bent at o, the tongue D bent at d and turned outwardly at d all arranged, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. VALLEAU.
