Description

L. B. RANDALL.
. Churn.
No. 53,487. Patented March 27, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
D. B. RANDALL, OF WEST GLOVER, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 53,4Q7, dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, D.B. RANDALL, of West Glover, in the county of Orleans and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a churn with my improvement applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a back elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the plane of the line a0 at,
Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
My invention consists in hinging or pivoting the frame or upright which supports the gearing employed for operating the churn in such manner that it may be folded down alongside of the churn, so as to place the whole device in a more portable condition, and so that it will occupy but little space when the churn is not required for use.
A designates the legs of the device, and B a cross-piece secured to the top of the legs.
0 is the churn, which is placed between the legs and secured to aplati'orm, a, on which it rests.
D is the frame or upright which supports the gearing for operating the churn. it is hinged, as shown at 1), Figs. 2 and 3, to the cross-piece B, and is supported laterally by projecting pieces c c, secured on top of the cross-piece B, between which it swings, and is held in place by a pin, E, which passes through the said projecting-pieces c c and the upright D. At the top of this upright D, on the front thereof, there is mounted a fly-wheel, F, to which a pitman, d, is attached, which is adjustable radially on the fly-wheel, so as to give more or less throw or strike upon the dasher-rod e, to which its lower end is pivoted, and it, as well as the dasher-rod, is arranged to travel in a guide, Gr, secured to the upright D. The rear end of the fly-wheel shaft carries a gear-wheel, H, which engages with a larger gear, 1, which latter carries a crank, J, for operating the churn-dasher.
A bar, K, which is hinged at one end to one of the legs of the device, holds down the lid of the churn, and the pressure of this bar upon thelid of the churn may beregulated by throwing the bar under any particular tooth on a rack, L, secured to the opposite leg of the device.
The above is a brief description of the whole machine; but the features which constitute my invention are:
First, hinging the upright D so that it may be folded down so as to bring the gearing alongside of the churn, and thus make the device more portable, as well as to economize in room. The whole device when the upright is folded down is in such a shape that it can be stowed awayin many aplace where it could not be were it not capable of being folded.
Second, the rack L, secured to one leg of the machine, provides a means for quick adjustment of the bar K, whose pressure upon the lid of the churn may be regulated according to the tooth on the rack L, under which it is caught.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Hinging or pivoting theframe or upright D,which supports the gearingfor operatiugthe churn, 111 such manner that it may be folded, substantially as specified.
2. The rack L, in combination with the bar K and hinged upright D, substantially as specified.
D. B. RANDALL.
