Description

J. D. CAMPBELL & J. ELLIOTT.
Improvement in Churns.
No. 131,660. ,.Zfyf. Patented sepl.24,1a72.

UNITED STATES PATENT @Trrcn JOHN D. CAMPBELL AND JAMES ELLIOTT, OF JAMESTOWN, INDIANA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN ci-lueurs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,660, dated September 24, 1872.
To all `whom it ma/y concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN D. CAMPBELL and JAMES ELLIOTT, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Boone and State of Indiana, have invented a certain Improvement in Churns, of which the following is a specication:
The nature of our invention consists in the means provided for holding the `churn and its dasher in position during the operation of churning, which are composed of a pair of brackets fastened to the frame-work and iitting the contour of the churn, which they partly surround, and a detachable hoop or strap for holding the 'churn-in place, and a hinged bracket with a bearing in its' outer end to receive the upper journal of the dasher, its lower journal being fitted in a suitable step in the bottom of the churn. All these parts are so arranged that the 'churn and its dasher may be detached readily from 'the mechanism for driving the dasher'.
Figure-1 is a sectional elevation of our'improved churn attached to the mechanism for driving the dasher. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. t
The same letters of reference are employed in both figures in the designation of identical parts.
The mechanism which is Aused for operating the dasher of the churn is mounted upon the frame-work A, in rear of the upright vboard A1, and consists of the shafts B and C, geared together by bevel-wheels, and carrying, the former a winch, B', for turning it, and the latter a disk, C', which is connected, by means. of the rod D, to an arm, E', on the dasher E,
the rod passing through an elongated slot, a', in the upright board A1. The churn F, which maybe of the cylindrical form shown, rests. upon the, platform A2 of the frame-work, and is partly embraced by the fixed brackets Gr and G on the upright board A1, and secured by means of the curved hoop or strap H,
which encircles it upon its exterior side, and
is detachably secured to the board A1, in any preferred manner. The lower journal of the dasher is placed in a step, f, in the bottom of the churn, while its upper journal is received by a bearing, t', in the bracket I, which is hinged to the board A1 at the proper elevation, and, when let down over the dasher, secured by means of a hook, I. The dasher, which is provided with a series of spiral blades on the part entering the churn, receivesan oscillatory motion from the continuously-rotating disk C', the extent of oscillation being` regulated by a series of holes in the arm E', at either one of which the rod D may be connected. The churn and its dasher may be readily detached by throwing up the hinged bracket I and removing the hoop H and detaching-rod D.
What we'claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the churn and its dasher, the fixed brackets Gr G', detachable hoop H, and hinged bracket I, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
