LAMP BURNER.
No. 534,870. Patented Feb. 26, 1895.

. DANIEL T. nox, or MOUNT PLAsANT, PENNSYLVANIA.
LAM P-Bu RN ER.
SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,870, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed May 16, 1894:.
`To @ZZ whom it may aaneen/u Be it known thatLDANIEL T. FOX, residing at Mount Pleasant, in the county of West` I noreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in LampBurners, "of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in lamp burners and particularly in that class of such position and to lock or sustain it in such position and to this end the invention consists in a burner having base and top section and provided with a combined lifter and prop by which the top section may be lifted to and locked in its elevated position.
The invention consists further in certain features of construction and novel combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings--Figure 1 is a side view of a burner provided with my improvements, the top being lifted. Fig. 2 is an elevation at right angles to that shown in Fig. Land Fig.
' 3 is a detail view illustrating the jointing of the lever sections together and to the top section. Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate the application of the improvements to a different form of burner and in a somewhat different manner from that shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Referring now to the constructions shown in Figs. 1,2 and 3, the-base section A and the top section B may be of any desired construction or pattern, the base A being adapted for connection with the lamp body and the top B to receive the chimney. The top B is provided with depending rods C which slide in upright guides D inthe base section so that the top section may be slid up or down with respect to the base and preserved throughout its movements in alignment with such base as is desired. Manifestly the construction of these devices for guiding the npper section and permitting its movement may Serial No. 511,430. (No model.)
` be varied without departing from my inven tion. i
It is `obviously of importance to furnish means whereby the upper section may be readily adjusted to and maintained iu its elevated position so that it will not accidentally drop during the operation of lighting or eX- tinguishing the lamp, and to this end I provide what I term a combined lifter .and prop connected with the base and uppeil section and so constructed that it serves the double `purpose of lifting and locking the top section elevated.
In the construction shown I employ alever E, which is jointed or pivoted at F to the base A and is formed with a section G which is pivoted at one end to the upper section of the burner and at its other end to the main portion of the lever so that when such lever is operated to throw the top section toits highest position the jointed section will be so set with relation to the main portion of the lever as to lock the upper section in its highest position. At the same time the lever may `operate to lower the top section as will be readily understood.
As shown in Figs. 1 to 3 the jointed section G is pivoted in a keeper at the outer side or edge of the burner top and the Wall of said keeper H at h binds against the jointed section G when the top section is locked, but manifestly this maybe varied, a different arrangement being shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in which the jointed section is pivoted at the inner side of the top section and such section abuts a shoulder formed by bending the main portion of the lever laterally at I. In both these constructions the operation of the lifter and prop is substantially the same.. It will also be seen that in both such constructions I form the lever double-armed and employ two jointed sections for connecting such lever with the burner top.
When the sliding section has been lifted to its uppermost position the joint between the parts F and G is `thrown into or above a line drawn between the pivot of part G to the sliding section and F to the lower section when the weight of the upper section and the chimney applied thereto cannot bow the parts inward and downward but will bow them outward and upward so that they operate to lock IOO or prop the sliding section in elevated position. In such elevated position it Will be seen that the slide rods form one side of a triangle, the base section another side and the jointed prop the third.
While I prefer to employ the jointed construction of lever shown and described it is manifest that I do not desire in the broad features of my improvement to be restricted thereto, as different forms of lever may be employed to lift the burner top as Well as to lift and lock it without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved lamp burner herein described comprising the base section .the upper sliding section provided with keepers, the lever pivoted to the base section and thejointed sections pivoted at one end to the arms of the lever and having their other ends projected Within the keepers of the sliding section and pivotally connected with said section, such jointed sections being arranged to abut the keepers When the prop is bowed outward, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a lamp burner the combination of the base section the top section the rods fixed to one section and sliding in guides upon the other section, such rods forming one side of a triangle and the base section forming another side, the prop constituting the other side of the 'triangle and formed in sections jointed together and to the base and sliding sections and abutments for engagement by said prop in the elevated position of the sliding section all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a lamp burner the combination of the base section the sliding section, the slide rods the jointed sectional prop and the abutments for engagement by said prop in the elevated position of the slide section substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
