F. NELSEN. DUSTER.
No. 534,839. Patented Feb I: \S\ f I THE nonms PETERS co, PMoro-umu. WASNINGTDN, ti. c.
UNTTED STATES PATENT FFICEE FREDRICK NELSEN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO AUGUSTUS I. WOOD AND HENRY Z. ZIEGLER, OF SAME PLACE.
DUSTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,839, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed March 1, 1894-.- Serial No. 502,008. (No model.)
fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a duster formed of a tube and cap of wool or hair-pelt, and a supporting stick with which said tube and cap are connected, the outer end of the skin of said tube being closed around the hair of said cap, and made of less diameter than the skin of the latter, and resting upon the same, it being stitched to the wool or hair of the cap, outside of the skin thereof, whereby said end covers the skin of the cap, and prevents the same from being drawn outwardly through the tube, and the cap is retained in place on the stick by said end, without necessarily gumming, tacking, or stitching the skin of said cap to the stick. The portion of the stick on which the cap rests has aknob or swell around which the adjacent expanded portion of the skin of the tube is tightly drawn, while the portion of said tube adjacent to the inner part of said knob or swell which acts as a shoulder, is tightly drawn around the latter thus preventing the tube from slipping or being driven off the stick in outer direction, especially when in use.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a duster embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section on line 00, m, Fig. 1, the wool or hair being omitted.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates the body of a brush or duster, which is formed of a piece of lamb, sheep or goat pelt, the skin of which is bent and its ends united by stitches or otherwise, forming the tube B, which receives the stick C, and is secured thereto, the portion of said stick outside of said tube constituting the handle D.
The end portion E of the body A consists of apiece or capF of pelt, whose skin Gis inclosed, within and enveloped by the outer end of the tube B, said ends being brought together around the woolor hair of the cap, so that the diameter is less than said cap, and secured by stitching, the stitches H employed passing through the wool or hair of said pelt, whereby the end of the tube is held closed over the skin G, thus retaining the cap in position, and causing the wool or hair thereof to be, as it were, an integral portion of the body A, and avoiding the exposure of the front end of the stick, which otherwise would scratch or injure objects while being brushed, said front end being of the form of a knob of larger diameter than the main portionof the stick around which the adjacent portion of the tube B is drawn, and against which the skin G is rested, thus imparting the proper fullness to the body at said end, and firmly securing the relative parts to the stick.
The wool or hair of the brush is washed, cleansed and carded, thus imparting a soft and fiuffy appearance to the body A.
It will be seen that when the duster is in use, dust, dirt, 850., may be readily taken up by the same, and shaken therefrom, the duster when soiled being adapted to be washed and thus cleansed without affecting its nature and subsequent use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A duster formed of a body and end-cap of pelt, the tubular skin of said body, having its outer end reduced and overhanging the skin of said cap, and being partly expanded and partly contracted, said stick having on its outer end, a swell which forms the rest for said cap and is embraced by the adjacent eX- panded part of the tube of the body, the inner portion of said swell forming a shoulder which is engaged by the contracted part of said tube, the parts named being combined substantially as described.
. FREDRICK NELSEN.
