The present invention relates to improvements in brushes, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved type of combined massage and bath brush which may be readily manipulated by a person for with variously constructed cover members for permitting of the brush proper being used for various massaging operations.

A'still further object of the invention is to provide a novel type of brush adapted for detachably receiving-strap like handle portions for permitting of reaching inaccessibleportions of ones body, and the brush proper being of such construction as to detachably receive covering elements for use in massa to provide a novel type of brush of this character which may be readily collapsed into compact form for being transported in a suit case or the like, or for compact storing in a medicine cabinet or the like. I

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which drawings: I

Figure 1 is a view showing the device in use as a massaging device.

Figure 2 is a view showing the brush reversed and in use for scrubbing ones back.

Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the device showing portions broken away and showing but fragmentary portions of the strap like handles of the brush.

Referring particularly now to the brush proper A, and which is preferably ofoval shape in plan, the same embodies a back or carrier 10 formed of any desirable and .suit-. able material, and from one face of which extend the tufts of bristles 11. In the example shown, the upper surface of the back has been shown fiat, but it is to be understood that ifso desired the back may be provided with a convexed upper surface which merges into'the rim 12.

Carried by each end of, the back 10, and disposed below the rim 12, are wire like fastening members 18 having their longitudinally extending arms 14 bent downwardly as at 15 at their outer ends and connected by the transverse bar or portion 16 for providingbail like members at each end-of the back, disposed in a plane between the upper and lower faces of-the back. The arms 14 are preferably formed with barbs as shown in Figure 9, for preventing withdrawal of the fastening members from the back, and if the back 154 moulded, the fastening members maybe po-ffl sitioned in the back during the moulding operation. As will be observed in Figures 3, 5 and9, the arms project from the brush back at points spaced below the juncture of the rim 12 with the side wall of the brush back. Referring now to the strap like handle portions B which are adapted for detachable connection with the end portions of the brush proper, A, the same may be formed of any suitable flexible material, and each has secured to one end thereof as by means of stitchin gs 20, substantially T-shaped-heads 21. As

, will be observed in Figure l, the strap like portions 22 and the stem portions 23 of the heads 21, are of widths equal to the distance between the parallel arms 14. When the strap like port-ions 22 are drawn through the fastening members 13, the terminally disposed cross pieces 25 of the T'-shaped heads 21 will engage the down turned portions 15 of the fastening members and form a substantial hinge joint between the handle portions and the brush proper. These heads 21 may be formed of any suitable material, but it ispreferred that the same be formed of relatively stiff leather since such will prevent any possible injury to ones skin when using the device. It will readily be apparent. that when desiring to remove the strap like handles fromthe brush proper, the same may be readily drawn through thefastening members 13 by grasping the cross piece 25 of the heads 21.

Referring now to the pad or covering C,

' the same is formed from a smooth sheet of rubber and is provided with an inturned mar-. ginal flange 30 which is adapted to yieldably engage the rim 12 of the brush proper., This smooth surface pad or cover C will be found particularly well adapted for use in applying salves or other heavy medicaments to the body.

The pad or covering which is also formed of rubber, and which is particularly well adapted for massaging purposes, is also provided with a marginal flange 30 for yieldably engaging about the rim.12 of the brush proper A; The main body portion 31, of the cover D is provided with a series-of fingers or pro tuberances 32 which when the covenis applied to the brush proper willrreach undulations in the contour of the body and give a massage effect being a mechanical approximation of osteopathic rubbing. It will of course be apparent that each of the pads or covers 0 and D are of like outline in plan as that of the back of the brush proper.

The pad or cover E as illustrated in Figure 7 is formed of a relatively heavy fabric and is particularly well adapted for applying a soapy lather to the body. This cover is formed with a main body portion 33 which is adapted to engage or lie flat upon the upper surface of the brush back 10, and is provided at its marginal edge with a flange 35 formed by providing a gathered hem at the marginal edge of the main body portion 33. The stitching 36 for forming'the flange 35,

provides a way at the lower end of the flange through which a suitable draw string 37 maybe passed for securing the cover to the back 10 of the brush-proper.

The pad or cover F and which is formed of relatively thin fabric, embodies a main body portion 33 having a gathered hem provided at its marginal edge for providing a marginal flange 35'. The row of stitching 36 for forming the flange 35, also forms away at the lower edge of the flange through which a suitable draw string 37 may be passed for 4 securing the cover to the brush back 10. This type of pad or cover will be particularly well adapted for use in applying h'niment or other fluid medicaments.

" It will readily be apparent that when desir- ,ing to reach inaccessible parts of the body such as the back, that the strap like handle portions may be quickly applied to the brush proper, and when desiring to massage or scrub I portions of the body which may be readily reached, the handle portions may be easily ones hand. By so having the flange or rim 12 of athickness not more than half the thickness of the brush back 10, it will be seen that the portion between the lower side of the rim and the bristle carrying face will provide a suitable hand grip when one of the pads or covers are belng used for massaging for medicine applying purposes.

From the foregoing description it will be apparent that an extremely novel device of this character has been provided embodying features rendering the same particularly well adapted for use either as a device for massaging ones body, or for use as a bath brush.

Changes in detail may be made to the specific form of the;invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of theinvention or the scope of the following claim.

I claim: 7 In a device of the class described, a substantially flat rigid carrier having opposed working faces, a bail fixedly carried by and extending from each end of the carrier bereingved and the brush proper grasped in tween the working faces thereof and each embodying an offset portion connected by a transverse portion, and a strap-like handle for each bail, each having a T-shaped head provided at one end thereof for detachably securing the handle members insaid hails with the cross section of the T-shaped head engaging the ofi'set portions of said bails between the working faces oflhe carrier.
