UNiTEDV STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED A. SPADONE, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER WV. SPADONE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.l
HosE-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,765, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed November 19, 1894. Serial No. 529,261. (No model.) i
To a/ZZ whom it heeey concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. SPADONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State `of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Reels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which ro it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to automatic valve Ar 5 for hose-reel of the character described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States, filed November 13, 1894, Serial No. 528,618, and it consists in the combination with the stationary main water pipe, a short zo pipe extending from said water main and entering through the upright, a valve head secured to the axle of said reel and said short pipe butting against a valve seat in said valve head.
It also consists in the combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying sheetof drawing is shown a central vertical `section of an ordinary 3o hose-,reel having my improvement attached; the two upright bearings and the main water pipe being partly in elevation.
In said drawingarepresents the water pipe being connected to the reel by a short pipe b 3 5 said pipe b passing through the stationary upright bearing c and having a threaded shoulder d for engaging the thread of the valve head e. In this valve head e is placed a valve seat f against which the pipe b abuts when 4o the iiow of water from the main pipe a is to be stopped from entering the valve head as clearly shown in the drawing. To the valve head as at g is secured the ordinary hose, said hose not being shown on the drawing, and at the other end of said valve head is secured the-other part of the axle h for the reel, said axle h revolving in the stationary upright bearing i and the two sidesj and k of the reel are permanently secured to said axle, part j 5o secured to part h and the part 7e to the valve head e as fully shown.
In operating my invention I iirst secure to the main water pipe the short pipe b 'after passing through the upright bearing c, said bearing acting as asupport for said pipe. On this pipe b is secured the valve head containing the part 7.. of the reel. The other end of said valve head is wedged into the axle h containing the other party' of the reel, this part of the axle working in the upright bearing i. To the short pipe extending from the valve head is secured the ordinary hose. To open this valve it is required to turn the reel so as to draw the pipe b from the valve seat and allow the water to enter the valve head and then through the hose. A
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown as I may use this valve without fastening the same to a hose-reel, by fastening in place of part la of the reel a hand wheel for turning said valve head.- In this case it will only be ynecessary to use one upright as will be clearly.
understood upon referring to the drawing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, isv
1. In'a hose reel, the combination with the stationary upright bearings, one of said bearings serving as a support for an inlet pipe connected to the main water pipe, said inlet pipe entering the revolving valve head, screw threads upon said inlet pipe and engaging with screw threads in said revolving valve head for opening and closing said inlet pipe, said revolving valve head being secured to and serving as the axle for said reel, the ends of said reel being permanently secured to said revolving valve seat, an outlet pipe connected to said revolving valve head, substantially as Set forth.
2. In a hose reel, the combination with a reel, a revolving head secured to said reel, an inlet pipe connected to the main Water pipe and entering into l said valve head, screw threads upon said inlet pipe andl engaging with screw threads in said revolving valve head fof opening or closing said inlet pipe,
'an outlet pipe connected to said revolving valve head, substantially as set forth.
IOO
3. In a hose reeLthe'cOmbination with a wheel permanently secured to a valve head,
an inlet pipe connected to the main water pipe and passing through a stationary bearing and entering into said valve head, a valve seat secured to said valve head,- an outlet pipe connected to .said valve head, said wheel and valve head revolving on said inlet pipe, substantially as described and for .the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth yabove I have hereunto set myhand this ro 16th day of November, 1894.
ALFRED A. SPADON E.
