To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. MELLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Woonsocket, inthecounty of Providence and State of Rhode Island,'l1ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fliers, of which the following is a specifi-- 1o and particularly to that class known as The object of the invention is to produce aflier of spring-steel having the same tension as the wrought-iron forging or other fliers in common use, the said flier having a hollow arm comprising two pieces joined together in any suitable manner.
' A further object of the invention is to provide a hollow flier-arm having an unusually 2o smooth inner surface, which isa great advantage in devices of this character.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a spreader cast in asingle piece'and ready for use, with the exception of a single drill-hole, which is made after it is cast.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination of parts to be hereinafter more, fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawin gs,formin g part of this speci ficati0n,wherein like characters denote corresponding parts 3 5 in the several views, and in which.-
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of aspindle' with the flier balance-arm attached. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of a hollow arm with the elements detached. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 0 are detail views of several elements.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the spindle; 2, a bobbin; 3, the balance-arm, and t the hollow arm comprising a sectiona, which is formed with the balance-arm, and a second section b, detachably secured to the first section. Each section of the hollow arm is provided withlugs 5, through which bolts or other like attaching means are passed. The outer edges of the section of the hollow arm are slightly separated to produce a threadslot 6 when the sections of the arm are connected. The fixed seotionof the hollow arm is. provided with a shoulder 7, against which the'beveled edge-of the upper end of the reniovablesection is attached.
It will be seen that a hollow arm formed in accordance with the invention when the two sections are separated may be properly finished on the inner surface to remove any roughness which would interfere with the movement of the thread therethrough. "With the forged hollowarms theroughened inner surface is a matter of much annoyance at times, which is entirely obviated through the medium of the invention herein disclosed.
The footpiece or spreader 8 is cast with the socket 9 to embrace and fasten to the hollow arm through the medium of the recessed log 10, formed on the said hollow arm. The upper end of the spreaders forming the lugis reduced inthe socket, but the end 11 thereof is enlargedto form the shoulder 12, in order to prevent rotation with relation to the hollow arm. The curved portion of the spreader forming the socket 9 is sprung over the hollow arm into the recess of the lug.
The operation and advantages will, it is thought, he understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that changes in the proportions and details of construction maybe resortedto for successfully carrying the invention into practice without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is i r k 1. The herein-described flier, having a hol low arm, comprising two sections, lugs on the hollow arms and means engaging the lugs for binding the sections together.
2. A'flier comprising arms one of which is formed of separable parts, one section of the separable arm being formed with the other arm and means for securing the sections together.
