BOBBIN=HOLDER FOR SPINNENG-SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,572, dated October 2, 11.888.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DAVIS, of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Bobbin-Holders for Spinning-Spindles; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawings making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure 1 is a view of the spindle, with vertical section of bobbin in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same on line with the bottom of the bobbin.
My invention relates to the means of securing the bobbin to the spindle, and has for its object the avoidance of the sudden strain upon the bands and cylinders of the frame resulting from the stopping of the machinery and the proper security of the bobbin upon the spindle; and it consists in a friction sleeve or c01- lar secured to the spindle and so constructed and arranged that it will both hold the bobbin and allow it a limited rotary movement after the spindle has stopped, as hereinafter described.
The driving of the spindle at a very high rate of speed and the sudden stop which occurs when the power is cut off produce upon the bands and cylindersa very injurious strain.
In the drawings, A is the spindle, and B the bobbin upon the same. Upon the spindle at the proper distance from the upper end thereof 1 fasten two collars, O 0, having a vertical connection, D. Partially surrounding the spindle A, and between the collars G O, is a split sleeve, E, of elastic metal, held in place by bending inward the opposite corners until the distance between them is less than the diameter of the spindle. This, while it secures the sleeve E from coming off, does not interfere with its rotary movement upon the spindle, which is, however, limited to a slight change ofposition by the vertical connection D.
\Vhen the bobbin is pressed down by the hand, it compresses the sleeve E and creates a sufficient friction to securely hold the bobbin in place.
While the spindle is rotating, the sleeve E will press against the vertical connection D, upon one side thereof, and such pressure will be continued as long as the spindle continues to rotate. When, however, the power is shut off and the spindle stops, the acquired momentum will carry the bobbin a little farther in its rotation and until the sleeve E changes its position, so as to bring the opposite edge in contact with the vertical connection D. This momentary and gradually-diminishing continued rotation will serve to relieve the bands and cylinders from the injurious strain caused by a sudden and positive step. This device also firmly secures the bobbin upon the spindle and insures the requisite amount of twist in the yarn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spindle A, in combination with the collars C G and their vertical connection D and a split sleeve, E, for holding the bobbin partially surrounding the spindle between the collars.
