Description

T, H. ROGERS.
- (Model) Axle Skein;
. Nd. 237,778. Patehted Feb. 15, i881:
UNITED STATES PATENT Price.
AXLE-SKEIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,778, dated February 15, 1881.
Application filed December 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TIMOTHY H. ROGERS, of Warsaw, in the county of Duplin and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in AXle-Skeins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by likeletters of reference.
This invention relates to axle-skeins applicable alike to wooden or metallic, or to combined wooden and metallic, axles; and it consists in certain improvements in the construclion of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the .axle, and B the spindle, which is provided upon its upper side with alongitudinal groove, 0, its under side being flattened, as shown at D.
E is the skein, which consists of a segmental bar, F, fitting upon the flattened under side of the spindle, and provided at its ends with sleeves or thimbles G H, as shown. The inner thimble or sleeve, G, is provided upon its inside with a longitudinal feather or rib, I, which fits in the groove 0, and operates, in conjunction with the segmental bar F, fitting (ModeL) upon the flattened under side of the spindle, to prevent the skein from turning out of position upon the latter.
The spindle may, in practice, he made of wood or metal. The skein I prefer to make of brass, Babbitt metal, or other suitable material, by which but a slight amount of friction shall be originated, so that the use of boxes may be dispensed with in the hubs titted upon myimproved spindles. The groove 0 is adapted to receive and retain for a considerable period a supply of lubricating material. I
My improved. axle-skein is simple, easily constructed, inexpensive, easily applied, and
will be found to add greatly to the durability of ordinary axles.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. The hereindescribedimproved axle-skein, consisting of a pair of bands, G H, connected by a flattened convex or segmental bar, F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the axle-spindle B, having longitudinal groove O and flattened under side, D, of the herein-described improved skein, consisting of band or sleeve Gr, having rib or feather 1, band H, and segmental connecting-bar F, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
TIMOTHY HENRY ROGERS.
