. HANDLE.
To all whom t may concern: t
Be it known that W6,IRA J. OWEN and BERNARD J. BoUWMnns'rnR, citizens of the United States, v residing at. Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State, of Michigan, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements 1n I-Iandles, ofwhich the following is a specification. 1
which may be formed ,of rods sheet providing a light, ,bllt
metal stampings strong structure of graceful and attractive appearance.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail side view of a carpet sweeper embodying the features of our invention.
Fig. II is a detail plan view.
Fig. III is a detail view partially in section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fig. I.
Fig. IV is a detail view partially in section on a line corresponding to line H of Fig. II. I
Fig. V is a section through the socket on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. II.
Fig. VI is a section through the shank on a line corresponding to line 6--6 of Fig. II, showing the manner of securing the socket members thereto.
Fig. VII is an inside view of one of the socket members the other being a duplicate thereof.
Fig. VIII is a plan of the blank from Specification of Letters Patent.

In the drawingsimilar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectionalview's are taken looking in the directionof 'the'little "arrows at the ends of the section line'si 'Referrlng to the" drawing,l represents the" fbody'of a sweeper and 2 one'of the wheels thereof." These parts are shown in conven- "tional form to illustrate an adaptation of our improvements; Thefshank "formedfof a rod bentjinto a bail shape and havingthje' endsv of its arms '4' turned inl at. a t n a e Loraine I i t sweeper body.

ur improved socket comprises a pair of socket members 9 of semi-cylindrical crosssection each havin a pair of semi-cylindrical laterally pro ecting arms 10 formed integrally therewith. 'These socket members are duplicates and are arranged facing as shown in Fig. V and with their arms edge to edge and embracing the shank 3 as shown in Fig. IV. The socket members are fixed or rigidly secured to the shank, preferably by means of spot welding, indicated at 11. The upper ends of the socket members are secured together and supported by a flanged ring 12 which is spun upon or otherwise snugly fitted thereto.
To retain the handle proper 13 we provide a threaded bushing 14 formed of a piece of sheet metal 15 rolled into a cylinder and spirally corrugated tov provide threads. The lower end of the bushing is notched at 16 to engage the shank shown in Fig. IV, thereby preventing it from turning. Its upper end is engaged by the flanged ring 12 so that the bushing is securely retained and constitutes a means for retaining the handle 13 and also a reinforcing member for the socket.
Our improved handle is light in weight and graceful and attractive in appearance and also has the advantage of being economical and very strong.
Wehave illustrated and described our ima or our improved handleis provements as adapted to handles for carpet sweepers. We have not attempted to illustrate or describe other adaptations or embodiments as we believe the disclosure made will enable the adaptation thereof as may be desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a handle, the combination of a baillike shank, a pair of sheet metal socket members of semi-cylindrical cross section disposed edge to edge and each having a pair of laterally projecting semi-cylindrical arms at their lower end disposed edge to edge embracing said shank and spot welded thereto, a socket bushing formed of sheet metal rolled into a cylinder and spirally corrugated providing threads, said bushing having notches in its lower end engaging said shank, and a flanged ring embracing the upper end of said socket members and overlapping the upper end of said bushing.
2. In a handle the combination of a shank, a pair of complementary sheet metal socket members disposed edge to edge and having a pair of laterally projecting complementary arms disposed edge to edge embracing said shank and welded thereto, a
socket bushing formed of sheet metal rolled into a cylinder and notched to engage said shank, and a ring on the upper end of said socket members engaging said bushing.
3. In a handle, the combination of a shank, a pair of complementary socket members having laterally projecting complementary arms engaging said shank and fixed thereto, a threaded socket bushing engaging said shank, and a flanged ring embracing the upper end of said socket members and engaging the upper end of said bushlng.
4. In a handle, the combination of a shank, a pair of complementary socket members having laterally projecting complementary arms engaging said shank and fixed thereto, a threaded socket bushing engaging said shank, and a ring embracingthe upper end of said socket members.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands and seals in thepresence of two witnesses. g
