SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,257, dated October 11, 1881.

Be it known that I, DAVID A. FosrEE, of Greens Fork, in the county ot' Wayne, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usei'ul Improvements in Vehicle-Wheels 5 and I the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
This invention relates to spindles and boxes in vehicle-wheels; and it consists in the novel construction, in combination of parts, as will be herei nafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure l represents a longitudinal section of the device without the hub and cap. Fig.2 is a longitudinal section, showing hub, cap, &c., the parts omitted in Fig. l.
The letter A is the axle. It is made square, thereby giving greater thickness on the four sides of the thimble-skein, which has a square hole for the reception ofthe axle.
B is the thimble-skein, held on the axle by means of key C. Said key orrod passes through a groove in the lower side of the skein,being between the axle and thimble-skein, and turned up at its outer end at C. The key being enibedded entirely in the thimble-skein obviates cutting away the wood. It also holds the skein firmly in place on the axle without weakening with screws or bolts. It also strengthens the axle at the rear end ofthe skein by extending back to the body-bolt.
D is the bolt, whose body passes vertically through the axle, back ofthe thimble-skein, and also through the end of rod C, which terminates at that point. Rod C is therebyV held in position by means of bolt D, having a thread and nut on its under side. A.,
E represents a solid collar forming part of the thimble-skein.
F is a loose collar, which lits up over rear end of the thimble and against solid collar E. The collar-F also screws onto the box at T, as shown in Fig. 2( It tits sufticiently close to the thim exclude all grit or dirt, and yet retains sufcient yielding play for all practical purposes. 5o
y H is a cap covering oil-cup I. The cup supplies oil to the thimble-skein by a duct passing through the solid collar E, as shown in Fig. l. A small groove extends part way down the skein, and the oil passing through that comes in contact with the box, thereby producing ample lubrication.
J and K are elastic pads to prevent concussion. The pad J is held in a recessat the inner end ofthe hub. The pad K is set in arecess on the outer end ofthe hub, between the hub and cap.
L is the recess at holding pad J.
M is the recess on holding pad N is the cap which screws onto the end of the box. y
O represents the box. Itpasses through the hub, and Whenthe cap N is placed thereon the end of the box is completely closed, thereby excluding all dirt and grit. The pads are at the same time pressed firmly into their respective recesses.
PP are lugs or points passing through vthe pad J and into the end of thehub to prevent the box from turning in the hub while the cap N is being tightened, thus 'holding all firmly together, and giving'at the same time a suicient elasticity to the several parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a vehicle-wheel, the square axle A and the thimble-skein B, in combination with the key or rod C C and the bolt and nut D, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a vehicle-vi heel, the combination of the thimble-skein B, solid collar E, loose collar F, elastic pads J and K, oil-cup and cap H and 9o I, and lugs P P, for the purposes setforth.
