S. J. ROOT.
IIOGKING DEVICE FOR FASTENING DEVICES 0F OORSBTS.
No. 534,760. Patented Feb. 26, 1895.
NITED STATES- SARAH J. ROOT, on NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 534,760, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed August 16,1894. Serial No. 520,441. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH J. ROOT, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improve 'ment in Looking Devices for the Fastening Devices of Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of to produce, at a very lowcost for manufac-' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a broken view, in front elevation, showing the application of two of my improved locking devices to the lower ends of the two busks of a corset; Fig. 2, a detached view, in front elevation, of the device.
My invention relates to an improvement in looking devices for that class of corsets, the fastening devices whereof comprise headed studs and hooks adapted to be engaged therewith, the object of my present invention being ture, a simple, convenient and effective looking device, adapted to be transferred from one corset to another and designed to prevent the hooks of their fastening devices from bein g disengaged from the headed studs thereof.
WVith these ends in view, my invention consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I form indies from a single piece of sheet-metal, a small plate, comprising a handle-end A and a locking-end A, the former being adapted in size and shape to be conveniently grasped by the thumb and fingers for manipulating the device, and the latter containing a central, longitudinally-arranged, elongated slot a uniform in width throughout its length and a clearance notch a ofisetting laterally as shown from the inner end of the inner side wall of the said slot.
It is apparent that the particular contour of the locking device may be widely varied in detail, but in any form it will comprise a handle-end and a locking-end, the former being adapted to be grasped by the thumb and fingers and the latter containing a locking slot and a clearance notch.
My improved locking device is designed to independently of the corsets.
be used with a corset having one of its busks, B, furnished with headed studs 0, and the other of its busks, B, furnished with sheetmetal hooks 0, containing slots or openings, the inner ends of which are enlarged to permit the hooks to be engaged with the studs.
I do not, however, limit the use of my improved locking device to a fastening device consisting of headed studs and hooks of the form shown, for the hooks might be changed in form or construction without interfering with the use of my improvement.
I may employ one, or more than one, of my improved locking devices in each corset, it being particularly desired that the hook and stud at the lower ends of the busks should be provided with a fastening device, for the particular hook and stud mentioned are more likely than any others to become unfastened, allowing the lower ends of the busks to separate, which not only impairs the fit and convenience of the corset but also endangers the busks, as when so separated they are very likely to be bent too far and broken.
My design is'that my improved locking devices shall be made and supplied to the trade On account of being independent thereof, they may be transferred from one corset to another, as desired. In applying the locking device, it is presented to the headed stud with which it is desired to engage it in the inclined position in which the upper locking device of the two shown in Fig. l of the drawings is represented, the hook having been previously engaged with the stud in the usual manner. In this way the clearance notch is passed under the head and over the shank of the stud, the head of the stud being thus allowed to pass through the slot to permit the device to be drawn down into its normal pendent position, in which. it is supported by gravityand in which itis retained upon the stud by'the head thereof. Obvi ously, as long as the fastening device is retained upon the head of the stud the hook cannot be disengaged therefrom. If the'device should be lifted in any manner so as to cause the stud to move into the lower end of the slot or to the point therein opposite the clearance notch, the device will not on that account be disengaged, because, to effect that result, it must be canted or inclined, and in that position drawn away from the head of the stud.
I am aware that a slotted sheet-metal locking device for locking the fastening devices of a corset against disengagement is old, and I do not, therefore, claim such a construction broadly.
I am further aware thata fastening device having an elongated slot constructed with'an offset or clearance notch is old, and I do not claim such a construction broadly.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a corset, the combination with the busks thereof, of headed studs and laterally arranged sheet-metal hooks respectively applied to the said busks, and the said hooks having openings enlarged at theirinner ends to receive the said headed studs; and avertically arranged pendent locking device consisting solely of a vertically elongated single piece'of sheet-metal of which the upper end forms alocking-end, and'th'e lower end a handle-end, the former having formed in it a longitudinally arranged vertical slot, uniform in width throughout its length, and also having formed in it near'its lower'end a single clearance notch, offsetting laterally from one of the side walls of the said slot, and combining with the slot to form a sufficient clearance opening for the application of the device to, and its removal from one of the headed studs when the device is in a tilted or inclined position with respect to the head of the stud, substantially as described.
