D. M. ORUMLEY. FENCE.
No. 534, 35. Patented Feb. 26,1895
Fries.
DAVID M. CRUMLEY, OF YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,635, dated February 26, 1895.
Application filed May 4,1394. Serial No. 510,088. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID M. CRUMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yellow Springs, in the county of Greene, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improved fence, and relates particularly to that class thereof known as portable fences.
The object of my invention is to provide a very strong, neat and durable fence, one that can be quickly and easily set up, and one that will remain straight after being properly arranged.
WVith these objects in view my invention consists broadly in a series of panels having proper brace pieces, base pieces or sills for supporting the panels, brace wires for holding the meeting ends of panels upon said sills and means for connecting the said panels together.
My invention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
In carrying out my invention I employ a sill A of wood or other suitable material and upon the upper face thereof secure the parallel cleats a. Near eachend of the sill is an inclined aperture a through which is driven the anchor pin a said pins being driven in obliquely toward each other to hold the sill more securely and prevent it being pulled up.
B B indicate the panels of my improved fence each panel comprising the end posts 6 b the top brace boards I), the bottom brace board b and the intermediate vertical brace pieces 6 b The top and bottom braces-are preferably made of two pieces of board .arranged'at right angles to each other-=-that is, one piece arranged flatwise while the other is arranged edgewise forming a T it being understood that the pieces are securely connected together and secured in the end posts by dove tail or otherwise. The vertical brace pieces b rest upon the bottom boards and are slotted at their upper ends to receive the Vertical portion of the top brace piece.
0 0 indicate the parallel strands of wire which pass through the end post I) and also through the vertical brace pieces b These vertical pieces may be slotted to receive these wires, or simply perforated and the wires passed therethrough.
If desired additional vertical braces D and E maybe arranged above and below the top and bottom brace pieces, respectively, to brace the top and bottom wires of the panel.
In practice the panels are arranged end to end, the posts contacting and connected by means of bolts F F passed through both the posts. This binds the two posts together and makes them the same as one. The bottom ends of the posts are then seated upon the sill A between the cleats or strips a and a brace wire G is passed down between these posts until it rests upon the top bolt F. The ends of this wire are then connected withthe upper ends of the anchor pieces thus securely bracing the fence and holding it down upon the sill.
The T-shaped top and bottom brace boards add great strength and durability to the fence and also serve as bearings for the vertical brace pieces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a fence the combination of a series of panels comprising the end posts, the connecting bolts, the wire strands, T-shaped top and bottom, brace boards and the intermediate vertical brace pieces, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID M. ORUMLEY.
Witnesses ISAAC SoHAUER, WM. T. DnUMMoND.
