IMPROVEMENT m FENCE-POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 191,944, dated June 12, 1877; application filed September 30, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH DEWEY, of Otto, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new. and valuable Improvement in Fence Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my fence-post, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of fence-posts, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
On the annexed drawings, A A represent bars of angle-iron, which are V-shaped in cross-section, and extend from the upper rail to near the ground, where they are secured by bolt 12 to the neck on the flanged base B, which neck extends above the ground to the rail 0 The two V-shaped bars A A, which form the post, are placed opposite each other, and have the rails O C G between them. These v-shaped bars are provided with holes at their apices, through which, pass the'bolts a a a baid bolts are provided with suitable washers c c.
By having the bolts passed through the apex of each of these bars, and secured thereto, when they are tightened an equal pressure will be exerted upon each side of the bars A A, and they will be slightly embedded in the rails. 'This prevents the V-shaped bars from being spread by the force exerted by the bolts a a a when beingtightened.
In a post of this construction'less material is'used', and a stronger post is obtained than when difl'erently shaped, for the bars used are better able to resist the pressure of the screwbolts without spreading.
A fence-post having bisected metallic sections with biting or clamping edges, in combination with independent clamping bolts and wooden rails or panels, is not claimed inthis patent; but the providing with such a post of the flanged and pointed anchor, whereby it is securely held in position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the metallic perforated sections A A, having biting-edges 0 0, with independent clamping-bolts a a a, wooden rails O O 0 and point B, substantially as described. 7
In" testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
RALPH DEWEY.

M. S. BOTSFORD.
