sl Ecnlcfl'flonforming part of Letters Patent No; 534,143, dated February 12, 1895.
Application filed September 4, 1894. Serial No. 522.111. (No model.)
T0 dll whom it ntcty concLef-n:
Be it known that I, JOHN DOWLING, a citizen of the United States, mesiding at Wilkes- Barr, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Nail- Sets; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relatos to improvements in that class of wood-working tools known as fnail sets; the object in view being to produce a tool of simple construction that is adapted for setting nails of various sizes from the small brad to the large nail, and which may be convenientlymanipulated or handied to bring it into operativo position with relation to such brad or large nail.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings-.-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a trans verse sectional view through the punchhead.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The body or shank of the tool is designated as 1, and may be either rectangular or round in cross-section, and is gradually tapered from an intermediate point to its lower end, thus producing at said lower end the punch 2, adapted for operating upon theheads of nails of certain sizes. The upper or opposite end of the shank or body-portion serves as a head 3, to receive the impact offlthe hammer employedtor giving impetus to the setting-tool. As thusfar described it will be apparent that I have produced .merely the ordinary wellknown nail-set; and various sizes of these are necessary to all complete toolkits. When a number are e'mployed, the workman loses 7 time and expends considerable patience in rummaging through the kit for the desired size of punch, and as heretofore intimated, by
'cally opposite each mail-set 5, is an impacthead 6, to receive the blows of the hammer.
I have'merely illustrated the head as having two mail-sets and impact-heads, but it will be obvious that as many as may be desired can be employed.
By the inventionas disclosed it will be seen that I have produced a combination mail-set, the same being adapted to operate upon the heads of nails of various sizes. In operation, the shank or body-portion 1 serves as the handle and a most convenient manipulation is secured. V
Various means may be adapted for associating the shank 1 and head 4, in that,as stated, they may be formed integral, or as shown, the head may be slipped over the up per end of the shank, for the reception of which the head is provided with an opening 7, corresponding with the shank, and a pin or rivet 8, passed through the head and shank. These details however are of minor importanceand to such I do not wish tobe understood as limiting my invention.
Having des'cribed Y my invention, what I claim is 1. The herein described combination-tool, consisting of the shank terminating at its lower end in a nail set, and the head located 'on the shank between the ends of the latter and.having the Series of radial nail-sets of difierent sizes and radially opposite the same the impact-headssaid sets and heads being in the same transverse plane, substantially as specified.
2. The herein described combination-tool, consisting of the shank or body-p0rtion 1, terminating at its lower end in the mail-set 2,
and. its upper end in the impact-head the separa.te head 4, having a central opening re ceivng and fitting the shank 1, and provided With a series of mail-sets 5, of different sizes, and diametrieaily 0pp0site the same the impact-heads 6, and the rivet passed through the head and shank, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof aflix my signature 111 presence of two witnesses.
JOHN DO\VLING.
