Description
UNITE Starts ArtNr Irren.
llVlPROVED WlNDOW-BLIND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,4l2, dated March 27, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, L. W. CHASE, Ot' Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Blinds; and I do hereby declare that the ibllowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates to that class of window-blinds in which the several slats composing the blinds are hung` by tenons at each end in the upright or side pieces of the blind-frames, all of which slats are connected together by a common center strip, by pulling which up or down the slats are either opened or closed, and it consists, in lieu of using such connecting-strip upon the outside of the blind, in inserting and incasing it within a suitable groove or recess made in 011e ot' the side pieces of the blind-frame and extending in the direction of its length, to which strip, by and through a series of crank-arms, one for each tenon of the slats, at such end, the slats are connected, so that by grasping any one ofthe slats, or a suitable handle hung upon or to one of them, and pulling such slat up or down, the whole series of slats will be thus opened or closed, as the case may, as with the ordinary arrangement heretofore in use for such purpose.
The advantages of such an arrangement are many and Obvious to all, among which, however, may be mentioned that it is much more compact and neat, and the slats are left clear and free ot' any incumbrancestor their whole extent.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure l being a front view of a blind with its slats connected together according thereto, for the more full illustration ot' which the side or upright piece of the blind is shown in section and partially broken out; and Fig. 2, an edge view of the blind partially broken away.
a a in the drawings represent a blind'frame, which is constructed and its several pieces jointed together as in ordinary blinds, the slats b b of the blinds being hung at each end by tenons c c in the sides of the blind-frame.
One side strip or piece, d, of the blind has a recess or groove, f, formed in it for its full length, or sufticiently so to embrace all the tenons of the slats inserted in such side strip, in which recess is placed a strip, g, connecting the several tenons of the slats together by and through a crank-arm, h, for each tenen, inserted at one end in such tenons and at the other in the said strip g, so that by taking hold of the handle or button l, hung to one Of the blind-slats, and which I prefer should be the center one, or near to the same, and pulling such slat either up or down, all ot' the slats will be correspondingly operated or moved, thus opening or closing the same, as the case may be, and as is obvious without further eX- planation.
Upon the inside of the blind-frame, and at such side piece of the same as the tenons are connected, and at or near the lower end of the connecting strip g, I have hung a catch, m, by swinging which so as to bring its inner end, a, under the connecting strip g when the slats are closed it prevents the said strip from moving, thus rendering it impossible to open the slats until it is removed or disengaged therefrom, the advantages of which are obvious.
The groove or recess in which the slat-tenoils are connected, as explained, it is intended to have covered in any suitable manner, thus incasing the crank-arms and connecting-strip all within the blind and relieving the slats from any outside connecting-strip, as has heretofore been used, consequently much improving theI blind in many respects.
I claim as new a-nd desire to secure by Letters Patentl. As an improvement in window-blinds, the arrangement of the handle Z, single strip G, and crank-arms h, in combination with the slats b and tenons o, Operating in the manner and for the purpose herein specilied.
2.' rIhe combination of the latch m and strip g, in the manner and for the purpose herein specitied.
L. IV. CHASE.
