I have provided a simple way of securing the lever to the elastic strip by merely pointing the end of the lever and passing such point through the material of the elastic strip as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 5.
In order to loosen or break up the contents of the box whenever it may cake around or near the discharge-opening, I arrange within the box one or more agitators D which are connected with the tilting finger-lever B in such way that as the lever is tilted the agitators willbe rocked'or vibrated. This movement causes the agitators to stir or break up the contents near the opening and to urge it on toward the same for delivery therefrom. In the construction shown these agitators take the form of prongs or pins which are secured fast to the lever 13, they being preferably attached to the arm of the lever which extends across the opening I, and to a point thereon near the bend in the lever. These prongsextend through corresponding holes formed in the side of the box so as to project well into the interior of the case and in addition to acting as agitators they also serve as a means for mounting the lever in position and at the same time they pierce the elastic strip 0 and thereby hold it in place as shown in Fig. 6.
I find that it is possible to operate the device by transposing the finger-lever and the elastic band so that the band lies to the outside of the lever instead of the inside thereof. In either case the lever serves to raise the band away from the opening so that the contents may be readily discharged therefrom and I, therefore, wish it to be understood that my invention'is not limited to the specific form of construction herein shown, as the same may be variously modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.
From the foregoing description the operation and use of my improved device will be readilyunderstood. The box or can being filled with the desired material, for instance, tooth powder, seeds or granulated matter of any kind, the box is grasped in the hand as shown in Fig. l and tilted into about a horizontal position so as to move the contents of the box to the delivery-opening I, whereupon the lever B is pressed down by the thumb or finger, whichever may be the most convenient, and the strip 0 is stretched or lifted away from the opening so as to uncover it and allow the contents to fall through the opening onto the band from whence it can be delivered as by an ordinary spout. After the desired quantity of the contents has thus been delivered, the opening is then automatically closed by the elastic valve or strip, upon the removal of the finger from the lever.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a set of agitators for the contents of the receptacle, a rockinglevermounted upon the exterior of the receptacle, and intermediate connections whereby the operation of the lever may serve to move the agitators.
2. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a hand operated valve normally closing said opening, a set of agitators for the contents of the receptacle and connections intermediate said valve and agitators whereby the latter are moved whenever the valve is operated.
3. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge -opening, a finger lever adapted to normally close said opening with one end thereof and a set of agitators for the contents of the receptacle connected with and operated by said lever.
4. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a finger-lever adapted to normally close said opening with one end thereof, and a set of agitator prongs I mounted on said lever and projecting within the receptacle thereof.
5. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a finger-lever provided with one or more agitator prongs proj ecting through the wall of the receptacle and serving both as a means for mounting the lever in place and as agitators for the contents of the receptacle.
I 6. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a valve formed of elastic material and seated over the exterior of said opening, and a finger-lever engaging with one end of said valve for raising it from its seat.
7. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, a valve formed of elastic material and seated over the exterior of said opening, and means for raising one edge of the valve from its seat.
8. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, an elastic strip seated across the exterior of said opening so that one edge thereof may be raised from the opening and constituting a valve therefor and forming a spout for the opening when raised away from it.
9. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, an elastic strip seated across the exterior of said opening so that one edge thereof may be raised away from it and constituting a valve therefor and forming a spout for said opening when its edge is raised, and a finger-lever having one end thereof secured to the edge of said elastic strip for raising it away from the opening.
10. The combination of a receptacle provided with a discharge-opening, an elastic band placed around the receptacle covering said opening, and means for raising one edge of the band away from the opening, said band constituting a spout for the opening when its edge is raised.
11. The combination of a receptacle profor agitating the contents IIO vided with a discharge-opening, an elastic band seated over the exterior of said opening, a bent finger-lever secured by one end to said band and provided with one or more prongs, said prongs being passed through the band and the wall of the receptacle for holding the parts in place.
