Be it known that I, WALTER Pnren, or- Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable List or Index Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a rotary adjustable holder to contain a list or schedule comprising a number of items, such for example as a series of names which are to be held in position for convenient reference and arranged alphabetically.

The invention has for its especial object to enable a series of names to be grouped or arranged in alphabetical order and to be readily removed to permit the insertion of another name at the proper point, in case additions to an existing list are required. For example, in lists of voters, which are used by registrars and other officials, annual changes are required, certain names having to be removed, and other names inserted; and my invention aims to provide means whereby a list may be conveniently revised in the manner indicated.

The invention consists in the several improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a list holder embodying my invention. Fig. 1 represents atop plan View of the same. Fig. 2 represents a section on the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 rep resents a partial side view and partial section of a portion of my improved holder. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent detail views hereinafter referred to. Fig. 7 represents a section on line 7-7 of Fig. l Figs. 8 and 9 represent a modification.

to the hubs d (1', said sleeve, hubs, and spiders constituting a frame which is adapted to rotate freely on the standard I). The said frame is adapted to detachably hold a series of frames, each comprising two tubular parallel rods f and a cross-bar f connecting the lower ends of said rods, their upper ends being separated. In other words, each frame is closed at its lower end and open at its upper end. Each frame is adapted to receive a series of slips g, which maybe made of wood or other suitable material, each having two orifices g 9 (Fig. 6) adapted to receive the arms f f and slide freely thereon, so that a series or column of slips may be placed upon each frame, the lower slip of the column resting on the crossbar f, the slips being capable of being raised and moved from the frame as a whole, or a part of the slips may be so removed, leaving the rest in place. The outer edges of the slips are to be provided in any suitable manner with the names comprising the list which is to be held by the improved device. Said names may be printed upon slips of paper gummed upon the'edges of the slips, or they may be printed or otherwise impressed directly upon the slips themselves.

' The means for detachably engagingfihe slip-holding frames with the holder, as here shown, are as follows: The lower head or spider 6 is provided with a series of upwardly projecting studs e arranged in pairs, the studs of each pair being arranged to engage with sockets formed in downwardly projecting lugs f f on the cross-bars of the frames. The upper spider e is provided with a series of outwardly projecting elastic arms e which are affixed at their inner ends to the spider by screws 6 and are bifurcated at their outer portions, Where they are provided with eyes 6 adapted to receive the upper ends of the frame arms ff. The arms a yield upwardly, so that the frames may be applied to the carrier by being first engaged with the studs 6 e on the lower spider, the arms e yielding upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, and being then slipped or sprung to place upon the upper ends of the frame arms f, as shown in full lines in Fig. 7. It will be seen, therefore, that the frames may be filled or charged with slips arranged inthe desired order, and then frames, I provide a temporary holder, consist ing of a U-shaped frame composed of parallel arms '6 '1; adapted to enter the frame arms f, the latter being tubular and open at their upper ends, and a connecting cross-bar i. The said temporary holder, when not in use, may be inserted in an inverted position in the armsf, as shown in Fig. 3; and when the slips are removed from the frame the latter may be inverted, thus allowing the slips. to slide upon the temporary holder, which will then occupy the position shown in Fig. 4. When the slips are to be returned to the frame, a the arms Mare inserted in the tubular frame arms fand the slips are slid back to place on the frame.

It willbe seen that the described apparatus constitutes a very simple and convenient device whereby a list of names may be held alphabetically arranged, and may be conven iently revised and corrected in the manner indicated.

I do not limit myself to'the described details of construction of the device for detachably connecting the frames to the carrier, nor to the exact mechanical construction of parts hereinbefore described, as all these may be varied within the limits of mechanical skill and judgment, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The described holder may be placed in a case or cabinet having an opening formed to show a column of names. 'Any desired column may be brought opposite said opening, by rotation of the holder.

In Figs. 8 and 9 I showamodified construction of the slip. In this modification, the slip is shown as composed of a series of sections g which are placed in a row upon a transverse tube g One end of said tube is rigidly attached to a hooked piece 9 having an eye 9 adapted to slide upon one of the frame arms f. 9 represents another hooked piece of similar form to the piece 9, and having also an eye 9 adapted to slide on the other frame armf, said piece 9 having a stud g which enters the opposite end of the tube 9 but is free to move in and out of said tube. The pieces gand g are connected bya spring which draws said pieces toward each other and thus keeps the lug of the piece 9 in engagement with the tube 9 The slip thus constructed is engaged with the frame by placing the eyes g upon the frame rods f. When the slip is removed, the sections 9 may be released and withdrawn from the tube 9 by disengaging the stud g from the tube.

The sectional construction of the slip enables a different name or word to be formed upon each slip, and there may be as many sections as there are characters in the word or name. If desired, however, the slip may be in a single piece instead of being in sections.

I do not limit myself to the use of a frame and a series of slips-adapted to be placed detachablyon said frame in a rotary holder. A single frame composed of two parallel side bars or rods f f and a columnof independent slips adapted to be strung upon rods in the manner described may be used as a bulletin or bill of fare adapted to be hung upon a wall or otherwise mounted. Said frame may be supported by devices affixed to a Wall or other suitable support, and said devices maybe, for example, two studs similar to the studs e e and two spring arms similar to the arms a adapted to receive the upper ends of the frame be hung upon a wall; or said'frame may be supported in any other suitable manner which will permit its convenient removal.

I claim-- 1. A rotary list 'or'index holder, comprising a rotary carrier and a series of frames or holders each detachably engaged-at its ends with said carrier, each frame being closed at its lower end and open at its upper end, so that a series of perforated slips may be retained on each holder, as set forth.

2. A rotary list or index holder, comprising a rotary carrier, a series of frames open at their upper and closed at theirlower ends and detachably engaged with said carrier, each frame consisting of two tubular rods and a cross-piece connecting the lower ends of said rods, the rods being adapted to hold a series of perforated slips, and a U-shaped temporary holder adapted to be inserted in said tubular rods and to receive the slips therefrom, as set forth,

A rotary list or index holder, comprising a rotary carrier composed of two connected heads or spiders, one having a series of upwardly projecting studs and the other a series of vertically yielding spring arms, and a series of slip-holding frames provided with sockets at their lower ends to engage said studs, the upper ends of said frames being formed to engage said spring arms, as set forth.

4. An adjustable list or index holder comprising a movable frame open at one end and closed 'at the other, and provided with rods arranged to hold a series of slips, the closed end having sockets, combined with a carrier or support for said frame, having studs arranged to engage said sockets, and upwardly yielding fastening means arranged to engage the rods at the open end of the frame.

5. An adj u'stable list or index holder comprising a movable frame open at the upper end and closed at the lower end, said frame IO arranged to be inserted in said tubular rods to receive slips, substantially as and for the purpose described.
