' FILING-CABINET.
To all whom) it may concern:
Beit known that we, LELAND S. VVEATER, a citizen .of thev United Sta-tes Aof America, residing .,atlremont, vin the county of N e- \vaygo" a1id'State of Michigan, and-Truman F. ALTENBAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Seattle,in the county .ofjKing and State ofv lllashington,v
vhave invented certain new and usefulllmprovements vin'Filing-Cabinets, of which the following isay specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.Y
This invention relates to filing cabinets, zand more particularly to an arrangement thereof whereby a large number of leaflets,
cards, or like 'documents-may be stored in a Y small space in'lsucli a manner as to be readily accessible individually, without exposing the rest ofthe cabinet contents to view. Furthermore the parts are so disposed that liability to error in filing leaflets or replacing a.
card is reduced to a minimum.
The invention consists in the matters here inaftersetA forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, partially broken away, of a cabinet embodying features ofthe invention; Fig. 2 is a View in vertical, central section of the cabinet; Fig. 3 is a view in detail of an index bracket and clip; lFig. 'fl is a view showing the arrangement of a pocket and slides; and Fig. 5 isa view in detail of a card or leaflet slide. j
Referring to the drawings, a casing 1,
preferablyrectangular and of any suitabler material and construction, houses a wheel 2 which is journaled therein to rotate in a vertical plane with one side flush with the front of the case. The periphery of the wheel is substantially as wide as the casing. Handles 3 or knobs are provided for convenience in turning the wheel.
A plurality of substantially rectangular filing pockets4 extend radially at regular interyals from the periphery of the wheel, the inner end of each being secured to the rim and the outer end or front, whiohis open, being adapted to register with an opening in the top of the casing having a suitable lid 5. As herein indicated as a preferable arrangement the pockets equal in number the letters of the alphabet, and are each designated by such a letter, placed on a tag 6 or disk pendent on a pin 7 or otherwise sey "Specicat'o'n of'Letters Patent. p lafented Jan, 17, 1911, I l vApplication filed November 19, 1909. i Serial No. 528,906. l
y lcured to the face of the wheel adjacent the companion drawer so as to always hang in a vertical posit-ion. l
The inner faces of the pocket sides are grooved, slotted or `otherwise arrangedto [retain slides 8 having fronts 9, backs 10 and sides [11, a suitably disposed spring finger 12 l or other like device on the side enga-ging the' pocket wall frictionally, and-preventing accidental dislodgment when the pocket is in its lowest position, or the slide partly withdrawn, -as well as any Arattling when the wheel is turned. each have a spring presser finger 13 eX- tending from the back so as tehold the conf' tents of the slide in place, a finger hole 14 at the front allowing the leaflets, cards or documents to be readily lifted when the slide is drawn out. Preferably the finger is a spring wire bent on itself at its inner end and secured to the slide back, and closed on itself at its outer end in a. loop 15 so asto4 firmly hold the leaflets or documents down.
The spaces between the divergent sides of adjacent pockets areutilized forfindex plates or brackets 16, each secured toa pocket'wall adjacent and in lateral alinement with a slide front. Each ingerfhas asuitable clip for holding an index strip 18. Preferably theclip is a plate 19 around the ends of which the strip is folded and thencla-mped by a binding nut 20 engaging a central spindie 21 on the plate which extends through a bracket 16 on the pocketl side the nut drawingthe spindle and plate against the bracket and 'holding` the strip ends in place. Or other suitable preferred means may be used for securing the strips in place.
As a convenience verticalv tiling pockets 22 may be placed on the top of the case box holding reference or blank leaflets, and the lid 5 may have a tablet 23 for supporting a calendar or general indexl card. By mounting the casing on caster wheels 24 it may be readily moved as desired. The wheel 2 is preferably journaled on a suitable stu 25 on the back of the casing.
In operation, the user, by means of the pendent tabs on the wheel face, brings the desired pocket to register with the opening at the top of the casing, and by lifting the lid and withdrawing the 'slide he wishes, he has the leaflets or cards he 'requires at hand. In replacing the cards or leaflets, or filing new ones the fact that only one pocket is ac- The card or leaflet slides 8,y
eessible at a timev minimizes possibility oferror, While the capacity of the case is very great for the space occupied:
Obviously, changes 1n detalls of construction may be-made vWithout departing from the spirit-of the invention and. we -do not limit ourselves to any particular form or arrangement-of parts save as set forth 1n the appended* claims.
v What we claim as our invention is 1. In a tillng cablnet, an outer casing havingv an opening 1n one ofvits Walls, a cylmfdrical memberrotatable 'in the casingprof vided with. peripheral pockets each adapted to be brought successively and singly into registration with the opening by turning -the rotatable member, leaflet holding slides I pockets adapted to be brought successively into register with the opening and a series of pendent' tabs on the end of the cylinder for indicating the position of the several.V
v pockets adapted to maintain a vertical po'- vsition when the cylinder is turned.
3. In a lingvcabinet, a' casing `having an openingin one xvall, a Vcylindrical member rotatable in'a vertical plane therein with one l side visible in-the casing, radially disposed pockets on the periphery f the cylindrical member Whose outer open ends are adapted to be brought successivelyand singly into 'registration with lthe opening by turning theV member,I and an indicator tag'on4 the visible-side of the member adjacent each pocket, adapted to maintain a vertical po-b sition as'the cylinder is turned.
AWitnesses:
y 4'. In a -filing cabinet, an outer casing having an opening in its top, a wheel journaled in the casing to rotate in'a vertical plane, pockets extending radially from the wheel periphery whose open-outer ends are adapted t0 successively register with the opening when the wheel is' turned, slides in each pocketadapted to be withdrawn through the opening when in register therewith, indicator plates extending laterally from the pocket walls each alined with aslide, and an indicator tag for each pocket on one side of the wheel, adjacent the pocket, adapted 4to hang in vertical position as the Wheel revolves.- i y 5.
