TOOL FOR FORMING FLARING LIPS ON BOTTLES.
V SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 532,378, dated January 8,1895. I
Application filed July 12, 1894.
Serial No. 617,279- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, GEORGE L; JENKINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Philadelphia, (Germantowm) in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Forming Lips on Glass Bottles, of which the following is a specification. r
My invention relates to tools used for the forming of lips of glass bottles and the like and is designed specially for the production rapidly and economically, of a lip or flange 1 flaring outwardly from the neck of a bottle,
the object being to, provide a tool capable of formingsuch a lip or flange quicker than can be done by hand, with a less per-centage of loss and in a more uniform and regular manner.
In carrying out my invention I utilize the ordinary form of tool which I illustrate in the accompanying drawings, adding thereto improvements to accomplishthe purpose sought.
In the drawings-Figure 1, is a side elevation of the tool, and Fig. 2, a plan view of the forming head or plug. Fig. 3, shows the neck and lip of a bottle formed by said tool.
In the figures the ordinaryand well known I springjaws are shown at a a connected by a spring loop I). The forming head or plug is shown at c secured to a central rod (1 threaded through and supported by the spring loop 19. The jaws are guided in their lateral movement in the ordinary manner by a guide e fitted to the squared portion f of the rod at its lateral branches passing through openings in the jawsand turned up slightly to limit the outward movement.
My invention relates particularly to the construction of the central plug and the in-- terior of the jaws. This plug is shown at O V and is of ordinary shape down to the lineh,
at which line it joins a truncated cone 2 interposed between the plug and the base i, which is immediately joined on to the base of the cone. The base 'i, is rectangular and has upon its face next to the cone, an annular groove immediately around the base of the cone, as shown at k in Fig. 3. As will appear plainly in Fig. 2, asegment of this groove is. cut out on opposite sides. The straight face of the rectangular base on which the jaws bear out into the groove so as to open it on these opposite sides, and to expose the glass in the groove at those points to the faces of the jaws. The jaws are shown at Z, Z, Fig. 1. They are found with plain faces m, m, which bear against that part of the neck of the bottle, which is on the plug below the line h. Joining the upper or inner edges-of these plain faces m, are inclined faces 0., These inclines correspond, when the jaws are closed, to the inclination of the cone.
Above or within the inclined faces 0, are plain faces n,substantially in the same plane with the faces m, these faces at being adapted to bear against the cutaway sides of the groove. Now when the plug is pressed down into the neck of the bottle, and the jaws are closed upon the neck, the glass being soft is made to conform to the cone, and the edge of it is forced into the groove and as the bottle is turned, the edges exposed at the cutaway portions of the groove are pressed by the faces at, and are formed, and at the same time they are supported and kept in form by the base on which they 'move. The inclined faces'o, crowd the glass down into the groove, so that welldefined edges are formed smoothly and evenly, as illustrated in Fig. 3, in which 3 is the neck of the bottle formed by the faces m and 4 is the edge formed above the cone by the action of the groove, and the faces 01..
What I claim'is- 1. In a tool for forming the lip or flange on the neck of a bottle, a plug having a grooved base, the groove in said base being open on opposite sides, in combination with jaws having plain faces m adapted to bear on the glass opposite the plug, and plain faces 12 adapted to bear on the sides of the base and on the glass. in. the groove, all substantially as de-' scribed.
2. In a tool for forming the lip or flange on the sides of the base, all substantially as dethe neck of a bottle, a plug having a grooved scribed. 10 baseand a truncated cone interposed between In testimony whereof I affix my signature the plug and the base in combination with in presence of two witnesses.
5 jaws having plain faces m, adapted to bear on GEORGE L. J ENKINS:
the glass opposite the plug, inclined faces 0, Witnesses: a opposite the cone, and plain faces n, next to WM. WAGNER, J12,
the inclined faces and adapted to bear upon SAMUEL J. BURGIN.
