SEALING-CAP CONTROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent. l atented Feb. 15,. 1910.
Application filed March 2, 1909. Serial No. 480,930.
To all whom it may concern." =1 Be iit known that I, J AMESMILNOR HICKS, a =cit1zen of' the United States, residing at Summit, Union county, New-Jersey, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Sealing-Cap Controllers, of which the following is a specification.
"'My invention relatesto means for-centeri'ngand controlling sealing caps in capping tools.
The object of -my invention isto provide means for absolutely controlling the position of a sealing cap ina capping tool during the whole operationof securing the cap tool.
over a vessel mouth and bead and to this end my invention consists in certain elements in combination fully set forth and claimed in the following specification.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may understand, construct and use my invention, will proceed to describe it referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which-- .Figure 1. shows a longitudinal central section of a capping tool provided with my invention; the spindle of the cap controller in-its normal position with the barrel of a sealing cap inserted within the cup of the controller, ready to be applied to a vessel, the cap is shown as held in the capping tool by the rim or flange of the cap which is more or less elastic. Fig. 2. shows the same in position after the cap has been applied to the vessel. Fig. 3. shows a bottom view of the capping tool and controller without the cap and bottle. Fig. 4.-shows a top view of the controller.
A. shows a bottle having a bead A.
B. shows a hollow cylindrical capping C. shows a hollow cylindrical controller fitting the diameter of the hollow G of the capping tool.
D. shows a spindle which extends from the top of the center of the controller C up into a bore N of the body of the capping tool B.
E. shows a slot crosswise of spindle D.
F. shows a pin passed through the body of tool B, and through the slot Il-i-n the spindle D. This slot E and pin F control the downward throw of the controller C as shown in Fig. 1.
(1. shows the hollow of capping tool B.
- point where the two join.
the cap flange to be used, but so that the spring of the flange in entering this bore H 'willhold the cap by its frictional contact with the sides of the bore H, and under the shoulder P where bores H and G jo'in.
I. shows a crimped flange sealing cap having a smooth barrel and crown.
J'. shows the inner walls of the hollow G of tool B. I K. shows the cork lining in the cap I.
L. shows a spring pressing on spindle D located in its bore N of the tool B.
M. showsthe screw by which the tool is to be attached to a capping machine head.
N. shows the bore in tool B- in which spindle D works.
0. shows the hollow of controller C of a dilameter to fit the barrel of thecap being use P. shows the shoulder at the bottom of the hollow G and above the bore H, at the The hollow G of the tool B is of larger diameter than the cap I which is being used and the cap fits the inner wall of controller C and controller C fits the hollow of tool B, so that the cap I is centered in the tool and held in controller C. The wall of controller C extends only partially'to the depth of the cap barrel I, so that the controller walls do not interfere with the expansion of the cap barrel while the cap and bottle bead are brought forcibly together in capping. The capis expanded in passing the presses it inward until its exterior circumferenee passes into the hollow G of tool B,
"thus forcing the crimps under the vessel bead A, as shown in Fig. 2, and locking the cap to the vessel in perfectly true alinement.
Having now fully described my invention and the manner in which I haveembodied it, what I claim as new and as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination with a cup shaped capping tool. of an implement for centering and controlling sealing caps, while being applied to vessels, which consists of a cup shaped cylincap, and. is arranged to fit and have vertical g Mame drical controller which fits the barrel of the sealing cap, Within the capping tool at. all
times during "the capping operation, substantially asspecified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this 1st day of movement in the internal bore of .a cup j shaped capping tool; a spring located "Within the capping tool which presses upon the cup shaped cylindrical controller; and a stop arranged Within said capping tool to limit the I March 1909. downward throw of sand cup shaped cylin- JAMES MILNOR HICKS. drical controller, all constructed, and ar- Witnesses:
