Description

J. W. SMITH.
EMBROIDERING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES. No. 531,877. Patehted Jan 1, 1895.
21 lion/ 7 UNITED STATES PATENT rEicE,
JAG-OB TV. SMITH, OF CANTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRED O. ADAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
EMBROIDERING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,877, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed March 21,1894. Serial N01 504,485- (No modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embroidering Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a View showing a portion of the sewing machine head, with the needle at its highest point of elevation, and illustrating my device properly attached to the needle. Fig. 2, is a similar view, except that the needle is at its lowest point, showing my improved device properly attached to the needle, and seated upon the work. Fig. 3, is a detached view of the yielding presser foot.
The present invention has relation to embroidering attachments, and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings A,represents the head of the sewing machine, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, and may be of any kind or style, inasmuch as the present invention can be applied to all kinds of sewing machines. The needle a, is attached to the bar I) in the ordinary manner, and as shown it has removably attached the open presser foot 13, by means of the loops 0, and the spring coils d, which loops and spring coils are formed integral with the arms 6. To the bottom or lower ends of the arms 6 is attached the open presser foot or ring B, or if desired the open presser foot or ring B, may be formed integral with the arms e. For the purpose of providing the desired amount of elasticity for the purpose hereinafter described, the arms e, are looped or curled as illustrated at In the drawings two loops or curls w, are shown formed upon each side of the presser foot or ring, and one above the other.
The object and purpose of providing the elastic or yielding presser foot 13, are to provide for holding the work down upon the bed plate of the machine until the needle (1, has been sufficiently elevated, after which the presser foot moves upward with the needle, thereby clearing the presser foot from the work during the time the work is moved forward by the feed bar of the sewing machine.
By providing the open presser foot 13, it will form a guide for the thread from which the figure or monogram is to be made, and at the same time will be automatically lifted away from the work thereby exposing the entire figure to view.
By my peculiar arrangement the presser foot B, will come in contact with the work, and remain in contact a sufficient length of time to allow the loop to be formed for the shuttle.
By providing the loops 0, and locating the same as shown, the inner edges of said loops will come in direct contact with the needle a, thereby assisting in holding the arms 9, together with their different parts upon the needle.
It will be understood that during the time my device is to be brought into use, the common cloth-pressing foot is to be removed. For the purpose of holding the cloth upon which the figure or monogram is to be made, ordinary metallic bands may be used. It will also be understood, that in case it is desired to sew, narrow strips of trimming or various kinds of cords upon the cloth, the open presser foot or ring may be used to guide the trimmin g or cord.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the presser foot 13, having attached thereto the arms e, provided with the loops 6, and the spring coils d, and a vibrating needle, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a vibrating needle, hereunto subscribed my name in the presence having removably attached thereto the arms of two witnesses. 6, said arms being provided with the loops '0;
and curled at points between the loops 0, and JACOB SMITH 5 the presser foot B, substantially as and for W'itnesses:
the purpose specified. FRED W. BOND,
In testimony that I claim the above I have E. A. 0. SMITH.
