SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,822, dated September 6 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ITHANER A. ROBINSON, ofDe Kalb,in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable 5 Improvement in the lllanufacture of Mittens and Instruments Therefor; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the 1 annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of an edge view of my device when ready for I use, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a top view of the device when not in use, and Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.

This invention has relation to the manufac- 2o lure of mittens, and especially to the mode of attaching the skin or leather facing thereto; and it consists, mainly, in the process of stitching the lap of the facing to the back of the mitten after thelatter has been completed,

and, as auxiliary thereto, in the novel inside guide and holder designed to enable the glove to be properly presented to the machine, and to guide the shuttle-arm of the latter, so that the outer line of stitches will be kept well 0 within the margin of the back, all as hereinafter more fully shown and described.

In attaching the facings to mittens it has been customary heretofore either to secure the facing to the mitten before completing the 5 latter or else to stitch in the facing in forming the side seams of the mitten. The present invention is designed to avoid this in the case of finished mittens or those which are without side seams, being knit in tubular form.

In order to carry out this process, a holder and guide is provided, which is designed to be inserted within the mitten, and serves to present it to the shuttle-arm of the sewing-machine. This holder A is preferably made of.

These holders are designed to be made in right and left hand form; butif the wire used be of sufficiently-flexible quality the right-hand form can be changed to suit the left hand by merely altering the bend of the reversed or thuinb extension 0.

The holder, having been inserted within the mitten, enables it to be easilyhandled in presenting it to the machine, which should be of that class having a shuttle-carryingarm capable of being inserted into the mitten. The mitten is then manipulated in such a manner as to bring its back, near its marginal or outer portion, to the operating end of the shuttlearm, around which it is fed to receive the outer line of stitches, which is kept well within the outer limit by the guide branches 0 and d of the holder and by its bowed end. After the outer line of stitches has been placed through the back of the mitten and the lap of the facing the holder may be withdrawn and the ad'- ditional lines of stitching carried around the back and facing to secure thelatter sufliciently to the mitten.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

l. Amitten-holderand stitching-guideadapted to lit inside of and hold a mitten for stitching, as set forth.

2. A bent-wire mitten-holder and stitchingguide having the bowed end I), the side 0 branches, 0 and d, and the reversed thumb-extension 0, substantially as specified.
