ERICK J. SVVEDLUND, 0F ATYVATER, MINNESOTA.
WATCH-BOW FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,480, dated December 25, 1894.
Application filed December 5, 1893- Serial No. 492,836. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERICK J. SWEDLUND, of Atwater, Kandiyohi county, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVatch-Bow Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for fastening the ends of a watch-bow in the head or pendant of the watch case, and the object which I have in view is to provide cheap and readily applied invisible means for preventing the ends of the watch-bow from pulling out of the sockets or openings in the sides of the Watch pendant or head; and a further object is to generally strengthen the watch bow connection with the pendant.
To this end my invention consists, in the combination with the pendant or head, having interior sockets from which smaller holes leap through the walls of the pendant, of a watch-bow having ends to be inserted through said openings into said sockets, said ends of the bow being provided with annular grooves, and a split ring or cut washer for each end of the bow, and adapted to be inserted in the groove thereof and to beheld in place therein by the annular walls of the interior socket, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatiornand in which- Figure is a longitudinal section of a watch pendent or head showing a watch-bow scoured thereto, by means embodying my invention. the manner of inserting or removing the looking washersior rings Figs. 3 and 4: show two forms of locking washer or ring.
As shown in the drawings, 2 represents the watch case provided with the head or pendant 3, hollow as shown and containing the winding stem 4,- having the usual crown 5. The head has two interior sockets 6, from which smaller holes 7 lead through the walls of the head. Each end 8 of the bow has a groove 9, and the space left within the socket 0, after the end 8 is inserted, is about the Fig. 2 is a similar view showing same as the depth of the groove 9. The two together accommodate a split ring or washer 10 preferably round in cross section. By forcing the end in slightly the groove is exposed and the washer may be dropped into the same, after which the ends springing back carry a washer into the socket and the end is prevented from moving farther out by the engagemant of the upper or outer part of the washer or ring with the end of the socket 6. The removal of the locking ring or washer is accomplished by simply forcing in the end of the bow. The washer maybe made in several forms. The semicircular form shown in Fig. 3, and the nearly complete circular form shown in Fig. l, being preferable. The split ring of Fig. 4 is preferably of spring material, and must needs be sprung open to be placed upon or removed from the end of the bow. To preventthe ends from being forcedin accidentally, in which case the Washer might drop off, I preferably fill the space between the inner walls of the head and stem by employing the sleeve 12, which entirely fills the opening within the head and also prevents the withdrawal of the stem. The sleeve 12 also prevents passage of dust, &c., through the sockets to the interior of the watch.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. The combination, with the watch-head or pendant provided with peripheral openings forminginterior sockets 6 having smaller openings leading therefrom, of the watchbow having grooved ends inserted into said sockets, and a split ring 10 clamped in the groove of each end of said ring by the walls of said socket and forming an obstruction to the withdrawal of the end of the bow, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the watch-l1ead or pendant provided with the peripheral openings forming interior sockets 6 having smaller openings 7 leading therefrom, of the watch-bow having grooved ends inserted into said sockets, a split ring 10 clamped in the groove of each end of said ring and forming an obstruction to the withdrawal of the end of the bow, and a sleeve 1:2 inserted in said In testimony whereof I have hereunto set pendant and preventing the pushing in of my hand, this 27th day of November, 1893, lo the ends of the Watch-bow and also forming at Atwater, Minn. a tight joint with the inner wall of the pendr r 1 5 ant and preventing dust, or similar inate- ERICK ILDLUND' rial, Working into the pendant and thence In presence of into the works of the watch substantially as HENRY STENE, described.
