HOSE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,755, dated October 2, 1900.
I Application filed January 8, 1900. Serial No. 7 31. O mOdGL) T to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. BOWES, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pensacola, in the county of Escambia and State of Florida,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in hose-couplings; and its object, among other things, is to provide a device of simple, light, and durable construction which will be perfectly water-tight and the parts of which may be quickly coupled or uncoupled.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed,
and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the coupling. Fig. '2 is a central vertical longitudinal section theret'hrough. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the members of the coupling, and Fig. 4 is a similar View of the opposite member.
Referring to said figures by letters of reference, A is one of the members of the coupling, having one end B enlarged and recessed, as shown, forming annular shoulders O and D therein, said shoulder D adapted to support a packing-ring E, preferably substantially L-shaped in cross-section and formed of any suitable material, as leather. The innermost edge of this ring is preferably tapered inwardly and the outer portion E thereof is clamped between the shoulder D and a threaded ring F; engaging with threads formed within the inner wall of the enlarged end of the socket at a point between the shoulder D and the end thereof. Adjacent to said threaded portion the inner wall of the socket is provided with an annular groove G, the shoul der G formed thereby at the end of the memto project into the head B and through the packing-ring E, the end thereof resting at a point removed from the shoulder C.
An annular shoulder Kis formed upon the member J, which is adapted to be inserted between the shoulders G, and said shoulderis provided at diametrically-opposite points with flanges K, adapted to slide within the groove G when the member J is turned Within the head B. Each flange K is provided with inclined ends K and a notch K is also formed therein, as shown.
In operation the reduced end of the member J is inserted into the head B until the shoulder K bears upon the threaded ring F, the flanges K of said shoulder resting between the ends of the shoulders G. The members B and J are then turned in opposite directions, causing the flanges K to slide under the shoulders G, one of the inclined ends K raising the pin I, which immediately seats itself within the notch K when the same registers therewith. The parts will then be securely fastened together and can be removed only by pressing upon the thumb-piece I and turning them in opposite directions until the flanges K are out of engagement with the shoulders G.
It will be seen that when water is admitted to the coupling from either direction a portion thereof will pass between the end of the reduced portion J and the shoulder O, exerting an inward pressure upon the ring E and forcing the tapered edge thereof tightly upon the end J. It is obvious from the foregoing that the greater the. pressure within the coupling the tighter the ring E will bear upon portion J.
The foregoing description is confined to the preferred form of myinvention shown in the drawings; but I do not limit myself thereto, :00 as I am aware that modifications maybe made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof,and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; In ahose-coupling, the combination with a reduced member having flanges as described, of a receiving member, a tapered packing ring therein, oppositely arranged shoulders within said member for engagement with the flanges, and means within said member for locking the flanges in position.
2. In a hose-coupling, the combination with the flanged and reduced member, of a shouldered receiving member, a tapered packingring secured therein and adapted to inclose the reduced end of the opposite member, and a spring-controlled catch projecting through the receiving member and into engagement with said flanges.
3. In ahose-coupling, the combination with the reduced member having oppositely-arranged notched flanges, of a receiving mem- 2 5 her, a tapered packing-ring therein adapted to inclose the end of the opposite member, a threaded ringfor securing said packing in position, oppositely-arranged shoulders Within the receiving member for engagement with 36 JOHN J.
