Description

PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS L. FAULKNER, OF DERBY, CONNECTICUT.
SPITTooN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 53,131, dated March 13, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.:
Beit known that I, FRANCIS L. FAULKNER, of Derby, in the county ot' New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and usef'ul Improvement in Spittoons; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, which said drawings constitute part of this'speciiicatioli, and represent, iii- Figure l, a side view; Fig. 2, a vertical central section Fig. 3, a top view; Fig. 4., an inside view of the bottom closed; and in Fig. 5 a like view with the bottom opened, as in the act of clearing the bowl.
My invention is designed for use in railroadears, to be inserted in the floor so as to be nearly level therewith; and it consists in a peculiar construction whereby the bowl may be cleared without being removed from the floor.
To enable others to construct and use my improvement, 1 will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
A is a ring formed of a iiange upon its up-I per edge to rest upon the floor, as seen 1n Fig.'
2; B, the bowl set into the said ring and ex- 4tending down through the floor, as seen in Fig. 2 5 C, a grating which covers the bowl B, as seen in Fig. 3, and lying upon the upper edge of the said bowl, as seen in Fig. 2, so that it may be revolved within the ring A.
specified.
I form the bottom D with two openings, E E, (seen in Fig. 3,) and within the said bowl, resting upon the bottom D, as seen in Fig. 2, I set a thin metal plate,F, which, whenturued in the position seen in Fig. 4, covers the openings E, or when turned, as seen in Fig. 5, opens the same. .I connect the said plate F by means of a plate, G, or other means, so that by turning the grate C the plate F will also be turned. Therefore, when it is desired to clean the spittoon it is only necessary to turn the grate so as to move the pate F to uncover the openings E, which will permit the contents of the spittoon to fall through; and to aid in clearing the spittoon the plate F may be revolved several times. The said plate F, thus revolved, will tend to force the contents through the openings in the bottom.
The ring and bowl may, if preferred, be formed in one and the same piece.
Having thus, therefore, fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
Combination of grate C with the plate F, when constructed and arranged so that by turning the grate C the bowl may be opened or closed, substantially as and for the purpose FRANCIS L. FAULKNER.
In presence of- W. S. Bnownn, JOSEPH ToMLINsoN.
