JOHN N. RHOADS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROUSERS -FASTEN'ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,063, dated December 18, 1894.
I Application filed PebruaryZS, 1894. Serial No. 601,751- (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. RHOADS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers-Fasteners, of which the following is a f all, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation, developed, of the lower inside portion of a trousers leg to which the two parts of the deviceare attached. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the two parts of the device. Fig. 3 is a diagram of the bottom of the trousers leg, showing the device as in actual use.
The nature of this inventionis a device of novel construction for fastening the lower portions of the legs of trousers around the ankles of bicycle riders; and it consists in a two-part hook or catch, the members of which are socured, at a certain distance apart, on the inner when the said members are brought together and interlocked, such portion of the trousers will be firmly secured around the ankle of the rider, in a manner to prevent the flapping of the trousers leg, and also any danger of its catching in the machine.
The invention also consists in certain details and features that will be hereinafter described and duly pointed out.
Referring to the annexed drawings whichwhich represent what I believe to be the best form and construction of my device, A marks one part of the device, which maybetermed the hook, and B the other co-operating part which I term the eye.
The part A is preferably struck up and bent from brass, or other suitable sheet metal, into the form shown, that is to say,'one end thereof is bent back at a and then forwardly over itself at a, to form a hook a the extremityor tongue of which, preferably projects beyond the underlying part and turns slightly outwardly, as seen. The opposite substantially straight end portion of the hook is tapered to a point a and is provided with one or more inclined projections, or barbs, a in order that the part may be readily inserted into the material of the trousers and .be retained therein by the projections.
The eye part B is also provided with a similarly pointed substantially straight end 17 and tapering projections, .1). Its opposite end is'bent at right angles, or substantially so, the bent portion being provided with an aperture b which is adapted to receive the tongue of the hook.
The hook and eye above described are secured to the inside up-turned hem portion 0 of the bottom of the trousers log, by pressing the pointed, serrated or barbed ends through the fabric, as seen in Fig. 1, the hook and the eye being directed downward near the edge of the bottom. The partsare disposed a distance apart, not less than the circumference of the ankle of the rider.
It will be obvious that when the device is not in use it is out of the way and is, not ordinarily visible. When, however, it is to be used for its intended purpose, the parts A and B are caught by the wearer, and the hook engaged with the eye, in consequence of which the trousers leg is securely bound around the ankle of the rider.
As seen in Fig. 2, I usually bend inwardly, the tongue of the hook upon or near to the part beneath as at as, so that the eye portion, springing past thatpart of the hook, will be prevented from accidental disengagement.
I claim as my invention- In trousers, a'leg fastening device, com-- prising a hook part, one end portion of which is bent to form the hook proper, and whose opposite, substantially straight portion is tapered to a point and provided withlateral retaining barbs, and a co-acting eye part, having asimilar substantial straight, pointed and barbed end portion, and an opposite portion bent at substantially right angles and .apertured for engagementwithsaid hook, said parts being secured to the inside of the lower portion of the trousers leg, and adapted to be brought together and engaged, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN N. RHOADS.
