.T0 all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Fisr HATMAKER, of
Ithaca, in the county of lTompkins and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Reamer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved reamer, which is comparatively simple and durable in construction, and more especially designed for the use of plumbers, to conveniently and quickly repair all sizes of faucets and other similar articles.
The invention consists of a hollow handle adapted to carry a reversible shank formed at one end with a fixed cutter head and adapted to support at its other end a reamer withadjustable cutters.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. f
Figure l is aside elevation of the improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the adjustable reamer with the sleeve removed. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the fixed reamer. Fig. 5 is a sideelevation of the sleeve with part in section. Fig. 6 is an enlarged end view of the adjustable reamer; and Fig. 7 is a transverse section of the same on the line 7-7 vof Fig. 3.
The improved reamer is provided with a hollow handle A, formed at its open end with an integral screw thread. A', adapted to be engaged by the screw threads B and B2 formed on one end of the reamer shank B, the said shank being provided with integral cutters C, as is plainly shown in Figs. 2and 4.
The threads B and B2 are separated from each other by an integral collar B3, and in this end of the shank Bis formed an internal screw thread B4 adapted to be engaged by the threaded end D of a reamer D provided with adjustable cutters, as hereinafter more fully described. The threaded end D is formed with a reduced portion D3, formed with a recess D2 adapted to be engaged bya screw E screwing in the collar B3, and adapted to lock the reamer D in place on the'shank B carrying the fixed cutters C. The reamer D is provided with cutters D4 having their shanks D5 extending 'longitudinally in grooves D6, formed in the smooth end of the reamer shank, the ends of the said cutters being held in place by suitable set screws D7 which, however, permit of opening and closing the said cutters to adjust the reamer to any desired size. A screw D8 screwing in the end ofthe reamer shank, moves with its conicalhead in contact with the beveled edges'of the cutter heads D, so that the lattercan press outward in contact with a sleeve F screwing on the threaded end D of the reamer D. The outer end of this sleeve F, is formed with an internal bevel F', against which is adapted to press the outer beveled edges of the cutters D, whenever the operator screws up the screw D8. The large reamer H is adapted to be slipped over the cutters D4 and sleeve F and is fastened on the latter by a set screw H', as indicated inA Figs. l and 2, so that the tool may be used for reaming very large sized faucets or other articles.

When it is desired to use the well as. the reamer D, are removed from the end of the shank B, and the latter is screwed out of the thread B and reversed, so as to screw with the thread B2 into the thread A of the handle. v
The reamer C, extends outward, and the operator in taking hold of the handle A, can ream an article with the reamerC, by turning the handle A. When it is desired to ream openings larger than the size of the reamer C, I employ the adjustable reamer D, by screwing the shank B into the handle A, as illustrated in Fig. 2, and then fasten the threaded end D in the shank B by the IOO set screw E, and then adjust the set screw Ds until the cutters D4 measure the proper size for the opening to bereanied. The operator then turns the handle A, so asftofcause, the cutters D4 to cut and ream the opening. For use in larger openings the reamer H is employed, fastened on the sleeve F, as previously described.
The set screw D8 is not to be disturbed at'- ter the shank is put together, unless the cutting head-s need renewing or repairing.
Thus it will be seen that with a reamer of lthe construction described, the plumber or other mechanic is enabled to conveniently and quickly repair all sizes of faucets, bibs and other articles.
Having thus fully described my invention, I clailn as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent- 1. A reamer, comprising a hollow handle, a reversible shank adapted to be fastened to the said handle and carrying a ixed rearner, and a reamer having adjustable cutters adapted to be fastened on the said shank, substantially as shown and described.
2. A reamer, comprising a shank, cutters held longitudinally on the said shank, adapted to be bent inward or outward, a sleeve held on the said shank and extending over the said cutters, and al screw screwing in the shank and engaging the: said cutters' to press the latteroirtwardinto abent position against the said sleeve, substantially as shown and described.
3. A reamer, comprising a hollow handle, a
shank formed with a fixed rearner, .and `provided with two sets of screw threads adapted to screw in the open Aend of the said handle, a reamer with adjustable cutters adapted to be fastened in the said shank, and a centering guide adapted to screw on one of the threads on the said shank, substantially asshown and described. A reanler, comprising a hollow handle, a shank formed with a fixed reamer and provided with two sets of screw threads adapted to screw in the open ends of the said handle, a reamer with adjustable cutters adapted to be fastened in the said shank, a centering guide adapted to screw on one of the threads of the shank, and a large cutter adapted to be fastened on the said reamer having adj ustable cutters, substantially as shown and described.
