Application filed. June 24, 1912. Serial No. 705,553.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY E. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Beamers and Threaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tools and it has for its object the provision of a simple, inexpensive and efficient combination countersink and thread cutter.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the numerals of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which Figure l is an elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the countersink removed from the tap.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates a tap of ordinary construction.
2 is a countersink sleeved upon the tap and 8 is a collar screwedk upon the tap and secured thereto by set screws 4, t, the said collar being spaced apart a short distance from the countersink.
5 is a spiral spring secured at one of its ends to the rear outer edge of the countersink by clips 6 and screws 7 7. The clips 8, 8, which are disposed upon opposite sides of the tap, each has one of its ends secured to the lower convolute of the spring and its body portion extended through the collar, the free ends of the springs being bent slightly outward as shown.
It is evident that the adjustable collar or ring 3 may be constructed in two parts or sections having hinged connection and adapted to clamp instead of in the form of a solid ring or band, as shown and described.
From the foregoing description of construction, the use of the device and the advantages of the invention will be at once readily understood. The tap being held in a chuck and its free end rotated within the end of the pipe to be threaded will result in the cutting of threads in the interior of the pipe for a distance limited by the disstance between the cutting end of the countersink and the end of the tap. When the threads have been cut to this point, the cutting edges of the countersink engage the entrance of the pipe and in the further rotation of the tap the effect-ing of the entrance to the screw-threaded opening is enlarged and reamed. The spring connection between the fixed collar upon the tap and the countersink permits a sufficient yielding of the parts to insure accurate work.
What I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A thread cutter and countersink comprising a tap recessed longitudinally, a countersink sleeve having inwardly projecting ribs in the bore thereof movable within said recesses, a set nut upon the threaded portion of the die, a spring interposed between the nut and countersink, and means for holding the ends of the spring respectively against said nut and countersink sleeve, as set forth.
2. A thread cutter and countersink comprising a tap recessed longitudinally, a countersink sleeve with a shoulder at one end thereof having inwardly projectingribs in the bore thereof movable within said recesses, a set nut upon the threaded portion of the die and having a shouldered end, a coiled spring engaging said shouldered portion of the nut at one end and its other end engaging a shoulder upon the countersink, a clip fastened to the countersink and having curved portions engaging a spring and In testimony whereof I hereunto aix my holding the same upon the shoulder of the signature n the presence of two Witnesses.
