Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA A. TYLER, oF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN `HAIR-CRIIVIPING PINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,060, dated March 6, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA A. TYLER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Pin for Crimping the Hair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my pin. Fig. Z is an elastic band for holding and compressing` the hair. Fig. 3 is a view ot' the pin, showing the Winding of the hair upon it and the application of the elastic baud.
I construct my pin in the same form as that used for the holding ot' the hair in position, with the exception of the bow end, which, instead ot' being a true circular or half-looped form, is depressed in its'center, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, for the purpose of receiving and retaining the elastic loop, made ofindia-rubber or other suitable elastic material, as shown in Fig. 8.
The hair is first divided into sections or strands ot' the desired thickness for adjustment. The pin is then passed over the plait of hair and slipped upward upon it to the head. The hair is then Wound over and under the forks of the pin, as shown in Fig. 3, until the whole length of the plait is closely wound Within the pin. The elastic band, Fig.2, is then looped over the hair and between the forks ot' the pin and drawn around the fork on the one side over the hair and slipped into the depression vin the end of the pin, which holds it closely in position, compressing the hair up- Ward toward the head of the pin and laterally between the forks, as shown in Fig. 3.
The object herein sought is to thoroughly crimp the hair, and also to make a cheap article and one which can be used with very little trouble.
By my arrangement I accomplish fully the important object of closely and elastically compressing the hair upward toward the head ot' the pin and laterally between tlleforks, and also that of keeping the pin within the strandsbf hair, preventing it from sliding out by wearing.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hair-pin adapted for crimping, substantially as described. l
EMMA A. TYLER.
