To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that we, GHARLEs B. JONES and JOHN S. WETMORE, of Roanoke, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Hydraulic Ram, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which' Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section, taken on line 1-1 in Fig. 2, of our improved hydraulic ram. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 33 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4. is a horizontal section taken on line 44; in Fig. 1.

The object of'our invention is to construct a hydraulic ram, in which the path of the water entering the induction side and emerging from the check valve in the air chamber will be in a straight line, thus conserving the power of the descending column, and increasing the efficiency of the ram.
Our object is also to provide means for maintaining a constant supply of air in the air chamber.
Our invention consists in a base provided with a direct passage from the induction pipe to the check valve, and furnished with a valve chamber having a cap provided with a spherically concave valve seat and a convex valve,
fitted to the seat.
It also consists in adjustable guides for the valve stem, and in the combination with the induction passage, of an air tube for maintainin g a supply of air in the air chamber, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The base A of the ram is provided with two circular chambers B, 0, connected by the passage a, the walls of which extend to or beyond the walls of the chamber B, and terminate in a valve seat a for the check valve D. The passage on is widened in the direction of the valve chamber 0, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 4) to reduce the friction of the water in its passage to the check valve. The check valve D is attached to a spring I), the upper end of which is fastened to a lug c projecting upwardly from the base A, and the valve seat a is preferably, though not necessarily, inclined as shown. In the wall of the passage to is inserted an air tube (Z near the upper portion of the seat of the" check valve D. The base A, on the induction side, is provided with a threaded opening e, for receiving the induction pipe, and in the opposite side is formed a threaded opening f for receiving the eduction pipe; but the eduction pipe may lead from any other point in the air chamber side of the base. The base A is provided with a flange g, to which is secured the air chamber E.
The valve chamber 0 is closed by a cap F, attached to the flange g, the said cap being provided with a central opening it and a spherically concave valve seat '5. To the said valve seat is fitted a convex valve j,which is provided with a valve stem 7c extending through the opening h. The valve stem passes through guides ZZ', secured to the slotted arms mm projectin g from the slotted base plate at, which is secured by the tap bolt 0 to a support arranged at right angles to the cap F, the air chamber E constituting the'said support in the present case. The guides Z Z are secured to the arms m m by bolts passing through them and through slots in the said arms. The upper end of the valve stem 70 is threaded and provided with a nut 19 for limiting its downward motion, and the said nut, as Well as the said stem la, is perforated to receive the spring key g which prevents the nut from unscrewing. Water flowing into the ram through theinduction pipe inserted in the threaded opening e overflows through the annular space around the valve stem is in the opening h until sufficient momentum is acquired to lift the valve j, thus closing the opening h, when the momentum of the water opens the check valve D, allowing the water to flow through the passage a into the air chamber E. As the water reacts after the valve D closes, it draws in air through the air tube d, and this air rises by and lodges in the space adjoining the upper portion of the valve D, in position to pass into the air chamber as the said valve D is again opened, thus keeping the air chamber supplied with the necessary volume of air. The
stroke of the valve j is regulated by moving the plate n up or down, and it is adjusted to the valve seat by moving the guidesl Z in or ICO out, or laterally as may be required. B y making the cap F provided with the valve seat 1' in a piece which is separable from the body of the ram, its capacity may be readily changed to suit the volume of water under which it is operated, by employing another valve with a greater or less exhaust capacity as the circumstances may require. It is obvious that any repairs to the valve and valve seat may be readily accomplished.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- In a hydrauiic ram the base A provided with the chambers B G and the passage a conmeeting the said chambers, the concave valve seat 2' having the overflow opening h, the convex valvej fitted to the concave valve seat 1' and furnished with the valve stem 7c, the adjustable guides Z Z, the spring supported valve D, the air induction pipe d, and the air chamber E, substantially as specified.
